What is a fair install charge for the following...?

Having a local shop do these:

Front 1.5" lowering springs - (do you need an alignment with this mod?)
255 fuel pumps
3:73 gears

The only mod of the three I had done on the '03 was the fuel pumps, but that was with a number of others at the same time.

These are for the '99 - even knowing how many hours typically for these would help me.

Thanks for your imput!

good question

Front springs will probably grab you 1.5 - 2 hrs labor, plus a basic alignment.

Pumps i'm gonna be installing myself. I'm guessing 2 - 2.5 hours.

Gears i'm going to pay ford to do. My local dealer has a guy that is plenty experienced with them as far as setting the backlash and proper crush sleave tensions and such. To do it right, probably about 3-4 hrs.

Shop average in our area is about 90 bucks an hour so based off that, it's gonna cost a few bucks.

Don't know how mechanical you are but you may want to consider just throwing the pumps in if you've done it before. Change the springs yourself and have an allignment done, then have the gears done. Save half the cost at least. Good luck.

Thanks tallimeca....

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being a skilled mechanic) I would rate myself at 4-5. I have done most of my bolt ons. I have seen the pumps being done and it certainly helps to have a lift when you drop the one side of the gas tank. All I have are the four jack stands. I bought the spring compressor for my '66 fastback, but have yet to actually change out the suspension - I don't think the tool I bought is ideal for the L spring, but I could be wrong?

The gears, wouldn't even attempt to think about doing it myself. BUT - I do appreciate your imput - at least I have an idea now of what is fair.

You should not neeed a spring compressor to install drop springs. You will prob need a cam bolt set to get the alignment set.

Dan,

Where abouts are you? If it's anywhere near S. Florida, I have a guy for you.

Dan,

West coast huh. Great flats fishing over there . Well the guy I am going to be using is a Ford mechanic, which I think is SVT certified/trained. He is going to install my Roush suspension kit on Monday night for $300, including alignment (off the Ford clock, ofcourse). This is the first time I am going to use him, but he comes highly recommended by another member on this board. My hope is that he will be able to take a look at the rest of the truck and give me a bunch of pointers for the upcoming mods . Anyway, I hope you get it done for a fair price. If not, you could always take a drive to Broward county to get it done.

springs are so easy to do, 3 or 4 bolts to take off and your there, 6 if you put in your own camber bolts, (per side of course)
Shouldnt take but about 3 hours tops, including time to lift vechicle and put on stands etc

I would pay someone to do the gears, and pumps.

My local goodyear service shop wanted 250 dollars in labor to put in the four camber bolts. It took me around two hours, to do it twice since i put them in the wrong way (upside down) in a parking lot down the street

Pumps aren't that bad. What you need to do is grab a case of beer and ask 3-4 friends to come by to help you lift the bed off. Undo the 6-8 star bolts in the bed, the two gas hose screws behind the gas door, and the tail light harness under the truck and lift it off. Gives TOTAL access to the tank, and you can clean the frame/diff/everything while you're there.

I certainly appreciate everyone's advice!

I am going to do the springs myself.

What's the deal with the camberbolts/settings? Where can I buy?

Thanks again!!!

I picked mine up at Goodyear sevice center, they do alignment, oil changes etc
Basically its an offset washer that you can roll, and it moves the upper control arm into the center of the truck, or outwords, depending on which way it need to go.

I installed mine because goodyear wanted 250 bucks to install the four bolts.

If you can pick yours up ahead of time i would recomend doing all at once, then letting it settle over night, drive 30 minutes on it over some bumps to really get the springs to settle then go get it aligned.
