I had the same problem until my wife read a Ford pamphlet that came in the mail which recommended leaving the switch on any setting except the "Max A/C" or "Off" positions when shutting off the engine. Haven't had the problem since then which was about 2 weeks ago.

A quick search for 'cabin filter' brought up this little gem:

Has anyone tried this with a 2000 model yet? Are the part numbers and installation method still the same?

Hey guys,
Yes I put the cabin filter in and it was a contortionists nightmare squeezed under the passenger side. The filter blocks particulate only (sand, dust, etc.) not odors (its not activated charcoal). It was pretty hairy cutting out the fresh air plenum w/o being able to see all of what you are doing but it went ok. The kit with an extra filter cost me about $100.

Ford says to leave the climate controls open so that the truck can 'breathe' when the system is off (you knew it was alive didn't you?). Leaving it on 'off' or "max A/C" will close the outside vent door and essentially stagnate the air in the heat-A/C box.

For those of you with a smell that won't quit, Wurth makes a 'heater-A/C spray' which you spray in the air intake of the heater wait a few and then blow it out with the fan on high. Its about $20 / can you can get it @ {www.carcareonline.com} - a candy store of detailing goodies. Hope this helps.
