my round 2 with 99 SS
Last fall when when I got the truck my friend with a 99 SS six speed and I ran a few times. Back then he killed me from a roll 9 times, but I was able to get him from a dead stop once. He blamed the loss from a dead stop on a realy bad launch, fair enough. Well we had a rematch the other night. Five times from a dead stop, first two times had the same result of the truck pulling the SS hard out of the hole and keeping the lead (about 2-3 cars). Next run he got me, we were even out of the hole, then he pulled (he quit with a one car lead at about 60). Next time was about the same although he said it was even, I thought he started to pull. BTW at the track he has run 13.28 @ 105 stock.

Hey, not bad, but I got to thinking... Wasn't Ford's first auto a truck? I may be wrong, but I thought they were a truck company beofre they were a car company. So that kinda makes it clear to me that their fastest auto is a truck for a change. Nice run though, I would hate to own a sports car and fear the dreaded Lightning...
"Fear the dreaded Lightning"...the only part you got right about that was the dreaded part! Dude, I'll give it to ya, your trucks are quick, but notice I said quick, not fast. They have nice out of the hole power, but they die after that. I know, I know, (in a whiney voice) it's because the aerodynamics! Would you like some cheese with that whine?? Geesh, you guys kill me, every time, it's the same excuse, aerodynamics! Maybe you should've gotten a sports car after all, that way you wouldn't have such a slow turd!

Okay, correct me if I am wrong, but do I really need to go faster than 140mph?!!! I like spped and acceleration, but I do not want to die for it. Another thing, todays highways speed limits' are set at 70 75 mph, and up until a couple of years ago there was none in Montana during the daytime. I have only had my Lightning up to 120, not because I do not have *****, but a lot could happen at that speed. I ask myself, do I really need to go that fast? No. What I wanted was a truck that could do some minor towing and a little load hauling, the fact that it wins stoplight to stoplight races was extra and well worth the extra $6k. If I really wanted to go fast, listen to rattles, have my car break down on me, not be able to tow anything, have the groceries shipped to my door because they will not fit in my truck, and have to borrow a truck from a friend to go to the hardware store, I would have bought an f-body. Flame away, I hope you enjoy it.

I'd have to agree with Tundra here.
I've done my fair share of street racing, and I've won alot of them, even when I owned pity four-cylinder cars...because the street race rarely went about 100/110mph.
There is just not enough room to do 140 in most areas, let alone the danger of already doing 100mph.
Acceleration tends to be where its at, because if you can pull ahead quicker, you can get that box in to keep your challenger fighting for some good lange changes.
Heh heh.

Hello all..
I used to agree.. there is no need to go past the 140 mark.. but.. I will admit.. I have had a few freeway adventures that make you wish you could squeeze a few more miles out of it..

My reply really wasn't aimed at you 98SVT, but my point was the way you guys use your aerodynamics as an excuse! I rarely ever street race. First off, too risky getting caught, and not only is it dangerous to us, but it's also dangerous to the people around us, because once we start racing on the street, everyone driving on that street becomes involved! And I'm really not worried about top speed, it's just how fast you can get there in a 1/4 mile! And you're right about the other good qualities of the truck, e.g., the towing, hauling, and extra space, but if I wanted something like that, I would have gotten a truck also! But see, i wanted a car, a fast car at that, so none of the criteria given above was really a concern to me! So if any of you guys have any friends that would ever like to line up at Bowling Green, I would be more than happy to show you and them why I bought my F-Body over a truck!
Hey Faster than Lightning.... I'll be in Bowling Green this fall for the NMRA event, I'll be running open comp so if you got, bring it, I'm sure there are some Ford Fans that would be interested in a 4700lb truck waxing a f-body azz.
And that's the whole thing... if a 4700lb truck whips an F-body or a Mustang or whatever, then the owner of said car should be embarrassed. Period.
So you bought an F-body over a truck? Great! That's fine. That's your choice. You also chose it over a host of other vehicles out there.
Aerodynamics are not an excuse. They are a fact. If you don't think so, ask someone who's been racing at the drag strip, circle track, etc for awhile. Aerodynamics are huge. So is weight. Is than an excuse for _losing_? Not really. Run whatcha brung. If you get beat, so what?
I'm like you, FasterThanLightning. I have a car set up for 1/4 mile (although it doesn't hook worth a darn). But, there are a lot of people out there who race 1/8 mile. 90% of all street encounters are significantly less than 1/4 mile...for the exact reasons you mention. In a "race" like this the _facts_ are that the L is a worthy adversary. I'm _not_ saying the L will win all the races...that'd be stupid. But, just like it takes next to nothing to get the LS-1 cars to run really, really good, the same goes for the new L's.
That being said, very few L's I've heard of (and NONE that I've witnessed personally) will run higher trap speeds throught the 1/4 than an LS-1 with a decent driver. There are a couple on this board that run 107+ or so, which is darn impressive.
Did someone on this board go over to LS1 and talk some kind of stupid trash or something? I'm just curious about all the newbies over here now, who seem to have nothing better to do than nitpick a really nice truck, and challenge owners claims of "kills". Guess you guys have a LOT of time on your hands.

Faster Than Lightning,
I felt i had to add something to this conversation.I dont think anyone on this board makes excuses of why thier trucks get beat by cars.It is what it is...a truck. For all pratical purposes it shouldnt even be able to hang with a SS/TA or Cobra...corvette whatever. But it does. Not only is it fast, but it gets all the looks. Its rare, and when people see one all they can do is stare in awe.Do you get that kind of reaction?Us Lightning owners do wherever we go.I could have bought a corvette...But why? There are so many of them...So many f bodies out there. There is something special about this truck, but youd have to drive one to apreciate it.Sorry this is so longwinded,I love my truck,i love fast vehicles. If you read some of the posts here some L owners have broken into the 12's in the 1/4 mile.Fast for a barn door flying through the wind isnt it?Enjoy the ride brother! You should drive a Lightning, you wont want an fbody ever again...trust me!

My neighbor has a 95 LT1 6-speed f-body. we ran each other at the local test and tune last fall (I won all but one) and look forward to running him this year. He has added an exhaust, shifter, and relocated the battery. That should even us out until i get a chip. The point being, it was for the challenge, hone your technique, and most importantly, having fun in a safe environment. If he needs a hand twisting wrenches or need to borrow my air compressor, no prob. We rib each other whenever we can. Don't get me wrong, my blood is Ford blue. It is JUST FUN.
If i get beat, so what, i'm still a good sport about it no matter how much it may "hurt." Not an insecure, ego-centric individual.

Hey ZorPrime,
I used to go out every weekend and street race any takers (5-6) a day, ss, transams, c-5s, merqs, audis, you name it, only lost once to a viper, just had to do it.
As you can see from my past posts no one and I mean no one will race me any more (rice not included, but why even do it).
But now I get chased down from all kinds of cars that I wouldn't expect in traffic to SEE A LIGHTNING!
I'M NOT SO SURE I LIKE THIS, I FEEL LIKE I'M GOING TO GET CAR JACKED!
I CARRY A MP-5 under my coat now in the pashinger seat. Come get some, CCP approved!
