Operating Temperature Check......ALL trucks.

Participate in this excercise to evaluate the operating temperature that is independant of aftermarket guages and temp prob locations.

Most know that there is a test mode we can all enter on our trucks. If your not aware of this heres a quick explanation.

Insert Key the way to enter the diagnostic mode on the instrument cluster is to depress and hold the instrument cluster (Trip odometer) SELECT/RESET button,.......
Depress the button, while continuing pressing the SELECT/RESET button start the truck and a few seconds after the truck is started the odometer display will show tESt now release the button. The SELECT/RESET button must be released within 3 seconds of the odometer tESt display to begin the dealer test mode.

Now each time you depress the buttom a different test ****ion displays.... scroll through about 13 times until you see dEGC This is the display of engine temperature in Degrees C input from cylinder head temperature sensor. There will be a temp value exampledEGC060 60 degrees Celsius.

It is a consistant measurement for all trucks (Stock - Modded).

Please enter this ****ion the next time you go for a drive and post your results.

Lets see the difference between stock and modded cooling systems at a universal point of measurement.

post if you have a stock thermostat, stock fan and water pump and the temerature results of highway driving and stuck in traffic.... for a factory baseline.

and post if you have a 160, 170 t-stat ( 4.6 pump, stock pump, navi pump, electric ) and what kind of efan your running and what the results are from highway and traffic temps.

If you have an aftermarket temp guage how dose the trucks cylinder head temperature sensor compare to yours?

I just put on a 4.6 electric fan, a 170 t-stat, with the stock pump. I see 83C at 65 mph and 84-85C at 80 mph cruising on the highway. I set the fan to come on at 88C. I set it up where I can use either the HI or LO speed on the fan. It stays 86-88 in traffic today with an OAT of 85 humid degrees...

I never checked the temperature with the factory 180 t-stat and factory fan. Has anyone recorded the temps ?

Checked mine today. I have an LFP efan and 160 Tstat with stock pump. Running on the highway in 63*F weather the test showed 77*C which is 170*F, but my autometer temp gauge read approximately 160*F. In traffic the autometer was reading straight up 180* and the test showed 87*C which is actually 188*F. Looks like my gauge is reading 8 to 10 degrees cooler than actual.

Or the factory system is reading 8-10 degrees warmer than actual. I would not assume that the OEM sensors are more accurate than an Auto Meter. Maybe that's the case, but I'm not prepared to assume it.

They may also be reading differently due to where the sensors are installed. I don't know where the factory sensor is taking it's reading from, but the sensor for the Autometer is installed in a "T" in one of the heater hoses.
