True Flow Air Filter, good or bad...?

Ok, as I keep reading posts, it seems that some people are not happy with the tuning result's on this thing...

So what's the deal?

I just bought one, but have the L in storage, should I just stick with the K&N?

Thanks,

Steve

No problem with mine...I love it! In fact, I recently changed to an Airaid set up from the open Trueflow intake,,,, and, soon went back to the open Trueflow! My truck just ran better with the "open" set up and certainly sounds BETTER!

I better chime in. Grab a beer fellas..
I purchased a Truflow when they came out. I pulled it right out of the bag and slapped it in. Took my tuck and got it Dyno'd literally 3 days later by Torrie @ fastpartsnetwork. We put down 398/476. The FIRST run and the FIRST thing torrie told me was that he has NEVER in his 4 years of tuning L's and HD's, had to pull as much fuel out of an L as he did mine. I was under 9 A:F when I brought it in.

Part 2. After reading about other owners experiencing this "ultra rich" situation, and also seeing Tim @ Chickenears acknowledge the issue by sending cleaning kits, I started to wonder. I had another appointment with Torrie, so I yanked my Truflow off and went back to my K&N powerstack (PSP airkit the whole time btw)

So what happens? On my way around town I'm giving her a little gas. Remember, the ONLY thing I changed was the Air Filter. My A/F is now 12.3-12.5..DOH!!!! So I called Torrie and set up another Dyno appointment.

The straw that broke my Truflow back:
Working on Jason (Her2001)'s L. His wideband was showing LOW 10's A:F after his Truflow install. He also just grabbed it out of the bag and slapped it in. We pulled his filter and (I'm not lying), there was a literal puddle of oil in his MAF.

Now, I can't say what would happen if you cleaned them BEFORE putting them in (Tim says the factory over-oiled them), but it's just not worth it for me.

BTW, I have a Truflow for sale

Sorry so long winded. Just wanted to chime in!

P.S. Tim @ Chickenears is AWESOME to deal with. He even includes the cleaning kit with all Truflows now (I never got one because I ordered from him the DAY they came out. Hehe I'm a tad "impulsive" sometimes.

I didn't have the "over oiled" problem with the one that I got from Chickenears! It was one of the first ones offered I believe. Maybe just a bad batch!

I have experiance "ultra rich" situations when it would be very damp or raining outside while I'm driving. I don't use it no more and went back to my good old 12" powerstack.

I have one with a cleaning kit and adapter plate used very little for $100. Does that answer the question.
They are very pretty, I just like my AF1 a lot more.

Yeah I wasn't aware of these problems either, I am wondering if I am going to have any future problems, I didn't think a change in airfilters could do that much.

Same here......

EDIT.....I also cleaned mine before I put it in. It was soaked with oil when I took it out of the box. I lightly oiled it and it worked fine. Makes the Eaton scream like crazy. I knew if I didn't clean it, I would certainly have issues with the MAF.

I don't have a wideband installed but I am getting my trucked tuned my REM at the end of the month. I'll see what they have to say about it.

Because of previous posts, I also cleaned my well and lightly re-oiled it.

If they are cleaned they will perform great. This over-oiling of the filters at True Flow is why we include a free service kit with each filter. They are WAY over-oiled from the factory. The good thing about cleaning a True Flow as opposed to a gauze type filter is; you can spray it with cleaner and let it sit for 20 minutes and wash it out with a water hose, then blow it dry with an air hose. The whole process takes less than 30 minutes, you don't have to let it air dry overnight.

I have one on my L that dyno'd at 415 HP 553 TQ at 11.7 air/fuel. This is with a 6 pound pulley, and stock cats and manifolds. I also cleaned mine before installation.

Just clean them and they will be fine.

Tim
