1BADTK -- WTF man? What is with your attitude? How come people have become so "holier-then-thou" and "better-then-you" on the message board lately? When I first started reading and posting here, everyone was friendly and helpful. In the last two weeks I've seen atleast 6 posts now where the poster has been insulted and ridiculed. If you want to keep this place a popular meeting place for new Lightning owners its gotta stop.

Coming from a vehicle that began to die the slow death of body rot, I am worried about the possiblity of RUST in a few years. The scratch is about 5" long and has taken off the paint and the clear coat. I would like to get it back to the "clear coat" level, not just touch it up with some regular car touch-up paint. If I was going to do that, I wouldn't have posted this.

Pawn,

Gonna have to agree with you a little bit on your board opinion.

As far as your scratch? What the heck did you wash it with? hehe Are you POSITIVE it wasn't there when you picked it up? Maybe in all the awe you missed it somehow. Hehe took me a month to realize that my Lightning was the only one I have ever seen with pinstriping hehehe

Hey Pawn,

Ford has touchup in a little tube with the brush in the cap. My expeience is to forget the brush an use a toothpick to carefully fill the scratch, easy though you don't want to load up with paint all at once. Will take several attemps to do correctly since the t/u paint tends to shrink when it dries. Now you can buff out with light FINGER pressure using a mild rubbing compound. I belive that t/u paint is a special formula with an agressive primer built in so you don't have to clean the finish completely of wax etc. In fact I've found that the wax helps you to feather it in with the compound later.
The German t/u paint(for clear coats) comes as a two part system, one color, one clear. If you can get ahold of the clear stuff you can top coat your fill job and 'buff' again. I have 'filled' cuts in bumper skin using this method and the results are almost invisible. Good Luck

I'm sure 1BADTK was just joking, chill out. I know I have posted things before that sounded different after I read them and could have been taken in a negative way. Also I have learned to figure out certain members differnt types of humor. Touch up paint should work fine. Sorry about the scratch, and dont forget to get a life you jerk. JUST KIDDING! JUST KIDDING!

Pawn whatever you do I would do it before you put the liner in...last thing ya want is to trap any moisture in on top of it, especially if it's to the metal.

Caka, hehe I'm sure that 1Bad was kiddin, but it isn't necessarily him or an isolated incident. Seems there is a lot of *Oscar the Grouch Syndrome* catching

Pawn:

Consider spraying the bed with rubberized rust-proofing. You can purchase it anywhere. It may be a while before you have the bedrug out(major velcro). You don't want rust starting under it. Plus it makes the bedrun sit in there firmer and doesn't allow it to shift.

Hey, as far as the attitudes.... You might want to relax a bit. It's just a truck. A really cool truck, but it's just a truck....

Have fun!

Zaino Paint Chip Repair!

This is similar to Franko's response, but with much more detail to get it "perfect" as i'm sure you want.

Here's a fix for the chips:

Take isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip and dab in only in the chip a few times. Take a clean towel and dry chip. Take a match out of a match book. Use the opposite end of the head. Dab this in touch-up paint.(do not thin out touch-up paint)

Very carefully dab a very, very minute amount in the chip. Do not get any paint anywhere other then the chip depression. The trick here is not to try to fix the chip in one application. Do this every day until the paint in the chip is even with the rest of the paint surface. If you do this correctly, you will hardly notice that chip repair. You can compound the repair by hand very gently to even out the chip repair.

P.S Remember have patience. Don't try to touch-up the chip all at once. It's a gradual building up of the paint, that's the trick.

The same process is used to clear coat the area. After you have managed to do this, then you will use a light abrasive. I have posted an article about 3M Foam Pad Polish. You can also use 3M Finesse It for severe swirl, acid rain damage, but in this case FPP should work fine. Here is the previous post:

I would suggest getting your truck rhino lined or something of that nature. They scuff the entire bed to do it. Now they have a little less work to do. And I also think I have figured out who BADASSVT is.

Tear down garage with wood siding. Throw siding with nails in back of truck. Drive around for three days with siding in back before going to the dump. Back into dump. Lower tailgate. Floor truck. All siding will miraculosly disappear. Close tailgate. Next week buy bed cover. This is a truck not a corvette............

I know its a truck. One reason I love it. ..and Noelvm, my truck is a vette to me.. Sorry about being a little snappy back, was a rough day at work (when I replied) and I've been a little disappointed in the abrasiveness of some of the more recent posts...

The scratch bugged me out a bit because my truck isn't even 4 weeks old yet...its still a baby. I know scratches will happen in life, I just didn't want one this early, especially in a part I was planning on covering up anyway...I'm getting a BedHug...

I'm still in very-new-truck mood and want to keep the thing looking as gorgeous and perfect as possible. I've been washing it every weekend already. I also own a black truck, so scratches become quite visible when you hit the metal.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll ask the dealer about the clearcoat touch up paint. You guys have all had your trucks for a year now, so I imagine, scratches don't phase you as much.

Hey Pawn, I couldn't resist the above. Actually, I did that to my 93. It was a work truck and the bed got really scratched up. I haven't put anything in the back of my new one. My wife asked me to haul a friends furniture they were getting rid of to the church. I went crazy. You want me to do 2500 worth of damage to MY TRUCK to haul $50 worth of junk furniture?

She didn't speak to me for three days....................

I had a turn signal bezel exit the fender at a high rate of speed. Before leaving as it was connected to the wires it slammed into the fender and then went bouncing down the road. Nice scratch to the metal and dent. The dealership said they'd fix it but needed the truck for three days. That was six months ago.
When they have Lightning loaners or I have to go in the hospital thay can pry the truck from my cold dead hands!!!!!!!

I chose the wrong emoticon. This is not an angry post towards you thepawn. It is however a pissed post towards the dealer who wanted to buff my baby to fix an issue. Read on.

You wanna bet thepawn?

If you can find a swirl, or scratch in my paint finish then I would give you the truck *grin*.

I am "so" **** about my paint perfection, that I forced the dealership to repaint my truck after "FOMOCO" did not properly package it during the shipping process. Acid rain damage ruined the hood, roof, & flare sides & I could not remove them. The dealership said they would first try to buff it with abrasives, and I laughed.

I said "So you really think I bought a vehicle that needed to be buffed with abrasives to attain the proper finish?"

They just stared with the "dear in headlights look"

I said repaint it, and I want Dupont or R &M used. The clear coat better be top notch or I'll come back, and have you do it again until it's perfect.

They knew I was right, and it would not have been to right for me to allow them to just run over it with the buffer. I could have done that myself, and probably ended up just fine, but it's the idea of having to remove precious coats of clear that upset me.
