JDM Electric Fan Problem
JDM Electric Fan Problem
Weel, the fan kicks on, runs for about 7 seconds then shuts off.
Then repeats that cycle forever. Is it the relays going bad? I emailed
JDM TECH but haven't heard back from them.
Anyone else ever have this kind of problem with the E-Fan setup?
Anyone know the part numbers for the relays?
TIA,
Cliff
PS...I wanted to get it fixed today because it is beautiful out there 55 degrees !!!

I had the same problem when I did my electric fan. (hayden wiring kit)
It came with a circuit breaker I think it was a 30amp 12v one. It looks like a silver-2 spade fuse. Well it wasn't up to the task and would run for a few seconds then shut off... About a minute later (sometimes shorter/longer) it would kick on again, run for a few seconds and then shut off.
I threw that one out and went to the auto parts store and got a 40A, 14v circuit breaker, and haven't had a problem since.
In your case:
I don't think it would be a grounding problem.
The Fan may have some type of protection circuitry, if the motor is getting too hot or something like that. Make sure that the blades turn freely. If there is something hindering their turning, that may be overheating the motor..
Good luck.
Edit:
https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...t=electric+fan post #35.
Also, if your A/C has leaked out, the compressor will cycle on and off a lot, this *may* trigger the sensor to turn the fan on and off as a consequence (unlikely but possible)

Is the fan switching on with your AC pump??
If so this might be your problem.
My one switches on if the AC pump is running.
If your AC pump is switching on and off in short cycles maybe your low on charge pressure.
Switch of AC and see if fan is still running.

AC is off ... The whole shebang was installed by JDM and has
worked flawlessly for 3 years. I'm hoping it's the relays up on
the firewall, but I am NOT electrically knowledgable.
I emailed JDM Thursday, will wait for a reply.
Thanks for the hints, guys, I will check out those things too

Cliff, sounds like you're tripping the circuit breaker. If you are drawing more amps than the breaker is rated for, it will trip. So basically, you turn it on, it runs for a few seconds, overloads then trips. Then it resets shortly after, kicks the fan on, and repeats the process.
A draw of that nature can be caused by either the fan motor itself going bad, or maybe a bad ground. I think JDM uses a factory two speed Ford fan, so you might get away with changing the wiring to the other speed of the fan, and it may be good. Just a thought.

Most of the time a relay that malfuntions will do one of two things. It will just quit working and either stick on or off, or it will work intermintantly. If it is cycling on and off at the steady time frame you mentioned, it's doubtful that the relay would be the cause. It would usually be whats telling the relay to come on and off. Same with a malfunctioning fuse. It won't cut in and out at a steady pace time after time, unless maybe it's a resetable fuse that resets itself based on temps. But even in this case, it isn't likely it will cool and reset in the exact same time frame every time.
circuit breaker
sounds like a circuit breaker to me. If the fan is drawing badly. I have the JDM fan and I believe they use 40 amp breakers. If it's tripping a 40 amp breaker, you have a bad ground or bearing freezing up on the motor.
Relays are usually, won't turn on, or stick and stay on.

Thanks again, all ...
So are the two "switches" that they mount up on the firewall by the
battery side circuit breakers? That's what I thought they were, but
I am ignorant of electric things. I should have paid more attention
when they were installing it.
The two speed switch is a toggle that lets you run the high speed
fan circuit in the pits to cool the engine. Don't know if the other switches
(Relays) (Breakers) are used on the high speed side also.
What a mess. And I need to get it fixed before Sebring ...
< grin > cause it's HOT down there.

Ok then AC is off.
Check the current (load) drawn by fan using ammeter.
If it is within rated current replace breaker as it may be weak and tripping out early (thermal type with auto reset)
Run this check first
Check to see if the relay is switching on & off
If relay is on and fan is cutting in & out replace breaker
If relay is switching on & off then you may have a defective sensor.
This is installed into the block above the oil filter and connected by one wire.
if you ground this wire the fan cuts in.
Double check all connections it may be a loose wire.
Does the fan start cutting in & out as soon as you switch on or does it take a while for the engine to warm up then keep cutting in & out
Try replacing the sensor.
Just a few more ideas to throw into the pot buddy
