Competition, you gotta love it…
You every know one of those guys who just thinks he knows everything but knows nothing and worst yet don’t know how to use the internet to do any kind of research before actually trying to BS everybody?
No, well I do…
I have a friend who works for me who in the past few years, since I have owned my Lightning, has spent approx. $93,000 on vehicles to beat my “stock” Lightning. First $40,000 on a S2000 Honda, three out of three he lost, then $53,000 on a SSR Chevy truck thing, three out of three he lost.
He finally bought something that could spank my “stock” Lightning. He reportedly spent approx. $70,000 on another Chevy product. He would lead you, and anyone within ear shot, to believe it’s a 2006 Z06. Don’t misunderstand me the Z06, or any Vette for that matter, is an awesome performance vehicle.
This vehicle that he owns even cost an additional $2,700 for the special red metallic paint option from Chevy. All the other paint options come standard, but the special red metallic will set you back $2,700.
This vehicle also comes with special air pressure sensors in the wheels making it impossible to ever replace the wheels. If this vehicle doesn’t have the stock wheels with the special air pressure sensors in them the vehicle just will not start and would be basically useless except for perhaps a nice expensive yard decoration.
Well, problem is, this fool don’t own a Z06. He owns a Vette, and it will still spank my “stock” Lightning but not as bad as a Z06 would. Not knowing really anything about Vette’s I had to do my research after he informed me he finally bought something that would beat my Ford truck.
It took all but 10 minutes, on the internet, to realize he was full of it. I already knew the air pressure sensors was BS as well as the special $2,700 paint job but this Vette don’t have the front air scoop, don’t have the 12” wide wheels in the back, don’t have the ducktail on the rear, don’t have the flared rear quarter panels to accommodate the wider rear wheels and comes with an automatic transmission that is NOT available in the Z06, they ONLY come with a 6-speed standard transmission.
I can’t wait to get him to open the hood and see if the motor has a LS7 stamped on it…
It’s amazing how owning a $30,000 vehicle can inspire someone to spend well over $138,000 to $163,000 to actually beat you. I realize a standard 06 Vette is around $45,000 but I wouldn’t doubt he may have spent $70,000 on the Vette since when he bought his 03 SSR Chevy truck thing he really believed they only manufactured 50 of them and thus the reason he had no problem spending $53,000 while he could have bought a 04 for the same outrageous price…
Man I love this truck...

Don't get too over confident. Yes, are trucks are fast, but there are many things out there that aren't 50-70K + sports cars that WILL spank you. All it takes is the know how and a little cash and you can have a really fast vehicle. Shoot, the guys/gals over on the SRT forum would say the same thing about our $30K+ truck. A stage one SRT-4 will walk a stock L. And by NO MEANS am I promoting that little piece of crap. All I'm saying is dont get too over confident.
I love too see a little competition, and I respect any performance vehicle that gives you bang for your buck. Just remember where not the only ones.
What I love is it is a truck, and that's what makes it great about beating cars that weigh a grand or more less than you.
It's like, Here... I'll hand you your ***, then go pick up a full load of groceries, hull supplies back from the harware store, and tow a boat right after.

I completely agree with you and am by no means over confident. I do have to disagree about the SRT-4. While it’s a great little vehicle for the money, stock vs. stock it won’t walk a Lightning.
Last summer I had the opportunity to race one twice, same one. While it did not walk on my Lightning I didn’t walk on him either. Beat him by about a truck length each time. Same with the SRT-10 except in that case a few feet ahead with the Lightning.
Again I am talking stock vs. stock because like many here I believe once you start putting money into something you can make anything go fast. I know there is always something and someone faster then you…
Gator has spend about that much $ TRYING to be faster than me

I had the chance to play with a new Vette not long ago from a dead stop and took him pretty bad until we hit 80 or 90. I was surprised since I am mildly modified.
I actually got off the gas before he caught me and he gave me the thumbs up as he went by.
Must have been an automatic and the guy just didn't know how to drive it. I certainly wouldn't say "I beat a 05 Vette" but I did feel pretty good afterwards.
Seen a few Z06's out there and doubt if I'd waste the gas on an attempt.
This week in our local newspaper... there was an blurb about Chevy coming out with another version of the Vette with more than 505HP in Z06. Stating the new Z06 is so successful that they want a no bones Vette to top their success.

My friend has an 06 Z06 and I got him to come out to the track. Those cars are fugging impossible to hook up. He made 5 runs, the BEST was only a 12.8. They are amazing rides though. His black/blak is just downright sexy.
Oh yeah, it was 12.8@122
, so I'm pretty sure he was "gaining" lol!
Gorgeous cars, but it takes a VERY skilled driver to get the most out of them
From a 50 roll?...hahahah it's like God grabbed your bumper and yanked you backwards..

Fast car. We aren't even in the same league.
When I'm out there I assume that many things are faster. Sometimes I get a surprize and find out I was wrong.
Love 'Vettes and Lightnings, and own both. A stick C5 with traction and a good driver will run low 12's all day. We can certainly do the same with our trucks, so it should be a good race. Either way, both are good vehicles.

For him to run a 12.8 I can only guess his 60' times were in the 2.2-2.4 range.
My '02 Z06 when it was _stock_ ran 12.3 @ 116 in Texas (not the fastest, nor the slowest of places to run).
Back to the original post:
A C6 w/ auto trans should run high-12s relatively easily... but I don't want that guy in charge of my finances if he paid near $70k for one.

I didn't say a stock SRT-4.

Air pressure sensors do not for you to use the stock wheels. Most are incorparated into the valve stem and can be readily transfered to other wheels. I just did two different sets. No issuses. They also do not disable the vehicle. Simply a warning device the says "hey dummy gey off your butt and check your tires". Not intgrated into the ECU at all. Tire pressure sensors 101 class is dismissed.
yeah
I didn't say a stock SRT-4.
Strap a chip, and pulley, nevermind the filter on a stock lightning and you have an instant 12 second pickup which means ford could have sent these truck out of the factory running 12's instead of 13's.
That is fact.
There's a good chance if they spent a few extra bones on rods and now suspected valve springs, they would be a highly reliable 12 second stock vehicle.
That is also a fact.
When comparing rides, lets stick to vehicles that have a somewhat equal power to weight ratio, otherwise, there no comparison.
