Question For those with digital cameras

For those of you w/digital cameras. What resolution are the pics that you're posting on the board? I've been considering a digital camera for quite some time and not sure how good a camera to buy. Primarily I will probably just use it for posting pics on the board or emailing friends.

Peter,
I have a sony FD-91. I love this camera cause it uses a floppy as the media, so you can change floppy disks all day and not have to get back to a PC.

Anyway, if you look at https://www.f150online.com/f150board...ML/002325.html

You'll notice the top pics are 1024x768, which everyone says is to big. 640x480 for the smaller pics, which seems about right.

This camera does both, it's just a setting change on the camera..

Hope this helps..

Brad

Peter,

If you are serious about digital pictures, e-mail me your land line number (phone) at adp@ispchannel.com and I'll fill you in. If you just want to take snap shots, the previous advice is fine.

Generally, it is better to take pictures at the highest resolution and reduce them to no larger than 640 x 480 to post. You need some serious computer hardware and Adobe Photoshop 5.5 to accomplish this. (There are other programs that will do this, I just like Photoshop!)

If none of this makes sense, go with the simplest choice.

I don't think the net supports more that 72 pixels per inch or something like that so the Sony FD 71 which is I think 800 by 600 is great for internet photos. Also all but the Sony require software and connecting cables and special memory cards which are very expensive. The Sony shoots on regular floppy disk and in the jpeg format. Just take the card out of your camera and shove it in your computer. It is by far the most user friendly. You can learn how to use it in about 5 minutes. If you want 35mm quality pictures, call the guy above, but for posting pics the Sony is a winner.

Peter, I took this photo today of my L with my Sony FD71 using the FINE setting. I think it does 640X480. Looking pretty good after my 2nd coat of Zaino.

Is that true that the internet only supports 72dpi? From what I understand a standard PC monitor is 96 dpi, meaning internet wouldn't allow the average computer owner to use the screen to its full potential.

The critical question: how much do you want to spend? If all you ever want to do is post to the web, above advice is sound. But if you want to print your pics, you need all the resolution you can afford. I have a 3 year old Kodak DC-120 1.2 megapixel camera, which gives amazing results up to 8x10, but I am getting ready to replace it with a Nikon Coolpix 990 3.3 megapixel camera. For under $800 the resolution is unreal, better than the best pro cameras of a few years ago. But now that the 990 is out, the top rated Coolpix 950 2.1 megapixel camera should be available for less than $600, amazing technology for the bucks.

i have a nikon coolpix 900 which at the time was the best you could by.then the 950 came out then it was the best.now the 990 is out and guess what?yep, your right, its the best now.simple to use, great pictures, and anyone of them would make a great camera.they also have a 800 which is a cheaper version of the others.i use the highest resultion because its better to reduse the size than to try to make it bigger.also like our trucks a digital camera gets adictive.

I just saw the newest Canon Sureshot S20 at my local camera store. It is a 3.3 megapixel, with 2X optical zoom and it will fit right in my pocket, which would be great anytime I attend the car shows. I have no experience with Canon products. Anyone have the Sureshot S10 to give me an idea of how it performs. I've been reading a magazine that rates cameras, and they speak highly of the S10, but I never believe anything I read anymore when it comes to selling a product.

I have the Sony DSC F-505; its a great camera that uses the small memorystick as a recording medium. The Sony Mavica series is great because they use regular floppies, but you can only get 1.44 megs on each; memorystick on the other hand can go much higher. I have a 64 meg and its only about 1"x2" in size. The Mavica floppy, on the otherhand, can be put right into your computer and you're ready to download.

I pondered on the floppy versus memory stick for a long time. I finally would up going with a FD91 which uses the floppy drive.

In my mind here are the advantages:
You can copy floppies on the unit itself. Want to give someone else the pics you've just taken WIHTOUT going back to a pc, just keep extra floppies around and the camera will do the coping for you. The other main advantage I see is this: you can buy floppies almost anywhere. It's cheap media. You're not limited by a memory stick. Of course if you get a 64 Meg stick like Marv1 said, you can get 800 or so regular sized fine pics, or 275 1024x768 pics in fine resolution. But do download them to a PC you still have to have the cables and drivers installed. Every PC and Mac computer can read the flopppies, no cables needed.

Also another thing to look for is OPTICAL zoom, do NOT be fooled into thinking a digital zoom is the same. It's not. My camera has 14x optical, this is a great feature. Digital zoom equals a loss of clarity in a pic.

You can get a Kodak DC215 for $279.99, or the DC215 Millennium for $329.99. I use this one and it takes great pictures. When my Lightning arrives I'll post some pics.
