Post 1/4 mile times at Texas Motorplex

My Ford fanatic neighbor and I took the beast to Texas Motorplex last night, and man we had a ball!! The weather was good, but high humidity was cutting into our times a little.
I ran stock tires and hooked up fairly well. Keep in mind I havn't done this since 1972 or 73 when we were in highschool.
Anyway, it worked out great on the first pass because I was up against a red Chevy 454 SS. He jumped me out of the hole, but the beast caught him quick and it was a slaughter. I ran a 13.81 at just over 100MPH. Not bad, but I was expecting better. I think the humidity and a little detonation cost me.
I let my neighbor drive the last run and (this was great) he was up against a Ram Air Firebird. I was thinking..Oh Heck this is gonna be bad. Anyway, the beast came out of the hole and was pulling away as they came by!! I went nuts, but unfortunately the bird pulled on by near the end a and ran a 13.4. The Lightning was running 13.8's all night at just over 100 MPH.
---SIXPIPES---I met your son there last night. He's a good kid and has a lot of enthusiasm. He and his buddies were having a blast running their bikes. Good clean fun for the younger set.

Levi left me a message on my cell phone last night about running into you. I was at the Denton 1/8 mile last night with the DFW Chapter and had a great time. Silver_Soon was there and had a fun time talking about the "L"s. Levi didn't tell me what his R6 times were, but i'll probably find out soon enough. I also got to run a 454SS last night on my first run. Even though he sprayed me I still took him by about 2/10s. Track conditions were poor and they closed the track about midnight due to an engine that exploded at the finish line and oiled-up both lanes.

I was running 9-index and having a great time. The field was reduced from 22 to 6 cars (I was the only truck left), when they cancelled the rest of the event. Only race I lost was to a mid-70s Cougar with a big-a$$ motor and no hood. Love this truck!

I'll be at Ennis next Friday. Maybe we will run in to each other.

The SVT-Cobra/Corvette Club of Dallas meet next week at Ennis will start at about 9 PM. It is limited to members only. The regular street night is still on, but the Mustang/Vette meet will be "featured". Lightnings are not allowed in the program. I am going next Friday to get some runs in early.

The DFW events can be found under the Events & Happenings heading on the message board. The DFW F-150 Online Club is composed of F-150 owners from the DFW area. Check out some of the past events by doing a DFW search. Nice folks!

Sixpipes,

A 454SS sprayed you and you still rolled him? I love it.

Radar,

Don't be worried about your times last night at Ennis. 1st off my friend in the Jyro Mustang (US flag paint) said his air density gauge showed us racing right at 1000' above sea level... last weekend (the 17th) it was 300' BELOW sea level.

So, while it may have been an enjoyable evening, the weather was NOT good at all. It was pretty crappy really when compared to some of the trips people have made early in the season. It will only get worse for us this year, however, down here in N. Texas.

If you'd run last week, you probably would have hit 13.4-13.5/102+mph.

My LX runs like clockwork. It is very consistent, and I was off a solid .3 in ET and ~2.5mph from my typical times at Ennis.
Best last night was 11.04 @ 129.7mph.

So do NOT feel badly about the way your truck ran. My buddy in his '97 Cobra was VERY disappointed. Many people (not necessarily you) don't realize just how important air quality is. But, 83^F, 72% humidity do NOT bode well for a night at the track.

Sixpipes, I saw some of the "kids" running mid 11's on those 600cc rockets. I believe one of them was yours. Thanks for the reply. What is this club you are refering to and what's this SVTTexas thing at Ennis next week?

Does that Mean that at 9 the track is shut for the rest of us ?? If so it means show up early or not at all.

You think they are afraid of a lightning showing them up ??

Doug -

The SVT-Cobra/Corvette Club program starts at 9 PM. They will run the first round, take a break and let other cars run for a while, run the second round, break, third round, etc... Similar to the way they ran the 6-9 second brackets last Friday in Denton. It just means fewer runs after 9 PM.

I talked to one of the SVT-Cobra guys at Bankston about getting my Lightning into the program and he said it was limited to Cobra Mustangs only. He said his car has run 14 flat, but he is having a difficult time driving it. After I told him my best 1/4, he indicated that he thought his Cobra would be a sub-13 second car with a good driver.

There's no doubt that our trucks will take a similarly modified Mustang Cobra without much trouble. However, I don't want any part of the guys at the Dallas Corvette Club (ask Wyldman about this). They have some sub-12 second cars and are very serious about drag racing. Should be fun to watch anyway.

Sounds like fun. I feel like I could be developing a cough, it is likely to get much worse Friday afternoon. Might have to leave work early to take care of myself

See you Friday

What's absolutely STUPID about the Vette/Cobra deal is that "they (Vettes) want to race Cobras"...quote from several of the SVT guys at Bankston.

This must be b/c it would take about 3 posts to several local 5.0 Mustang lists I know of to get 5-6+ 10-11 sec. Fox Mustangs out there that would whip them, I guess.

Sure, there are some really fast Vettes...why don't they want to race the fast Mustangs? :P

No Dennis I won't be taking my Cobra out there. I won't make it to the track again at all until May 5-6 which is Fun Ford Weekend down in Houston.

That was one of the big reasons I went this past Friday. I knew the air would be nasty, but still wanted to get some runs in before Houston. I don't have time b/w now and then to go again.

To be honest, I don't frequent the track as much anymore...and when I go I try and hit the early season dates and the late season dates b/c the weather is so much nicer and the vehicles run significantly better.

Take care guys.

Wes,
Thanks for the infor regarding Friday night. I truly was expecting 13.5's with the setup I have. I know the weather situation was poor, but I don't have the guages etc. to know for sure. I really appreciate the info.

I have to tell ya'll, I had a super time out there. The people were great and the racing was awsome. It's been a while for me, and the ET's are very impressive these days. The LIGHTNING is a real favorite. The racers seem to love em. Must be a sentimental favorite thing or something to see the big beast giving a Ram Air Firebird a fit. I'm sure we could take em in the 1/8th mile for sure!!
Anybody out there have nitrous yet???
