Silver State Classic/ Nevada Open Road Challenge
Im thinking about running My L in the Silver State Classic this coming Sept. Im planning on heading down Vegas way to check out the Nevada Open Road Challenge (same race different name) this May.
1)Anyone been to one or competed in one or the other?
2)Anyone gonna be in the area and want to check it out?
Got the dates posted on the event boards. May 18-21 for the Nevada Challenge and I think the third weekend of Sept for the Silver State.

He, Ive done the silverstate, in a 93 Lightning, course is dead smooth even at 130 and does have a few challenging parts. But keep in mind your safty requirements for the top speed that you want to do. Go to www. silverstate classic.com web site for more info Stan,PS im also entered in the Big Bend event in April which is in Texas and the silverstate in Sept. Hope to see you at either event And I'm trying to form a team for Lightnings in Sept. so we can all receive a discount and are elligible for more prizes.
SHOOTS!!! Im in...
I was planning on just running the class stock class (forget the mph) this year just to get a feel for it.
Im already working on a way to put a set of 5 pt harnesses in without making it obvious.

Anyone who does run one of these events has to be aware of your speed the Silver State is abit touchy on exceeding your target speed [Max] can get a ticket for what ever they have you at, in the speed zone you were in! Could get costly very quick!!!

Struck, are you putting a roll-bar on? If not, a harness may be a challenge and the angle will probably be wrong on the shoulder straps (meaning from the shoulders to the floor? Also, keep in mind there is some discussion about the pros/cons of 4/5 pt. belts without a roll-bar, because they WILL hold your head and neck in place in a roll-over vs. a normal belt which would allow you to lean sideways. Thought you should consider this.

Is a 5 point and/or a roll cage a requirement for running in the Silver state Classic if you are running "stock"?

Im trying to work out ideas to stick in the harnesses and make it as least obtrusive as possible. Before I do anything though Im gonna run it by the guys down at my friends shop that builds racecars.
Id rather not do a cage but you do have a really good point about the harness angles etc.... hmmm wasnt planning on doing that for a while anyway.
There is a class that you can run with a totally stock vehicle. Best source for info is their website. From what I understand is that you try to average as close to the target speed for your class as possible and that there is a top speed limit for each class. Makes it a bit more interesting than just cruising it through the turns then doing 180 to make up your average.
Thats why I want to go down in may and check it out before I try to run one... doing homework =)

Checked out the website. It looks like an absolute gas. Not up for it in May, L. won't even be decently broken in by then. Might want to volunteer as course marshall to check it out, though. Really interested in running it in Sept., especially if I can go to the Bondurant school before then.
Oops, just read the rules more carefully. It would seem that if you plan to run in the Grand Sport class, where the L. would logically fit, you have to have a roll bar and 5 point harness. No way. Even to run in the Grand Touring class, which allows a tech speed of 140, requires the 5 point. Can someone explain what Tech speed is? Is this the maximum average allowable speed, or the maximum speed, period? I could live with 140 avg., but by then I think my L. will easily exceed 140, and I don't want to install a roll bar to prove it. Guess I will just have to find out clandestinely.

Tech speed is the max speed you can run ANYWHERE on the course [they have radar traps to ck that out]the target speed is the speed that you will average over the entire course. Its not as easy as you think you are starting from a standing start so you have to run close to your tech speed to make up the difference.I ran the Grand Touring Div and had to do over 130 for half the course to be within 5 sec of my target speed, remember your in a pick-up and its alittle more aerodynamic but at those speeds its more challenging, your driving at speeds that the the truck was not designed to stay at for long periods.I can get first hand experience on that if you want.
My friend races his Typhoon in this race and has had good luck. He has done everything possible for the suspension though to keep it from being lose at those speeds. There's a link below if you want to check it out.
He had gotten third place I believe. We have been getting his truck ready for this year so expect to see it there. Truck is really hacked with rollbar and fuel cell, but this is what it requires to compete in this race.
