Ford's "T-Car"
I know that this is a Lightning board, but I figured that some of y'all might be able to help me since my searches came up empty.
What is the deal with the Ford Talledaga? I saw a show about it a few years ago (maybe "My Classic Car"), but that was a few years ago.
I remember that they are very rare and very fast, but that is about all.
I was just wondering because there is a kid (20 years old or so) here at my apartment complex driving a blue and gold (looks to be factory) Talledaga. I haven't had the chance to talk to him (or I wouldn't be asking y'all), so if you could fill me in I would be more than happy.

Duck, the 69 talledaga was one of those racing type cars, that had to be sold to the general public, to be able to qualify for nascar. ford had the 335hp 428CJ in the talledaga, merc's was the 351 4v in the cyclone (clone)

This is the car that Richard Petty left his Plymouth factory ride for in 1969.
This car won the manufacture's point race and David Pearson won the Points Championship in one. It was a heck of a good year for Ford. The last one they had for a while,for in 1970 they ceased factory backing for their teams.
This is my Talladega. My wife calls it the great maroon hole, she says I keep throwing money down it. But I love my red baby. They don't make cars like this anymore, and when I hear that 428 cubic inches of Cobra Jet power rumble to life my heart skips a beat or two. Nothing like cubic inches to make the faint of heart swoon and make the rice rockets and little motored stuff get out of the way. It makes noise with 2.5 inch exhaust and turbo mufflers that if you are a gear head will put you in to a feeling of joy like no other can. It still needs some work but the main thing it needs driving and I just don't have the time. But I don't need any voluteers to help in that. Most books and magazines say that there is only 100 or so of the Talladegas left. That could be the reason most people have never seen or heard of it. Also Ford never did a big advertising campaign on these cars.

A little history on the Talladega and Cyclone Spoiler II.
The story of the Talladega begins in the late 60's as Ford and Chrysler fight for domination of NASCAR.(Hence domination of proformance car sales). Late in 1968 Dodge announced that they would change the Charger for 1969 and make it much more aerodinamic by making the grille flush, closed headlamps, and moving the back glass out to smoth up the lines making the Charger500 a semi fastback . The Ford factory teams then went to Ford to get a car to race and to out run the Charger 500.
Some rumor says that the Talladega was designed by the famous race team of Holman & Moody. It is know that Ford closed its Atlanta assembly plant in February 1969 just to run these cars. 754 of the Talladega's came off the line. NASCAR required 500 made for sale to the public to make the car legal to race.
Most of the numbers on the Cyclone are that 500 were made but some say that not that many were not made.
The Talladega was built cheap as Ford could build it. AM radio, Taxi cab bench seat, column shift C-6, 3.25 31 spline non-locking rear end, argent finish steel wheels, F70 X 14 white-wall tires (I am Saving the best till last), and a 335(?)hp 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet Motor. The front of the car was extended and sloped down making it 5.9 inches longer than the Sportsroof Torino it was based on.
The Cyclone was some what different it had bucket seats and a floor shift and was a little more dressed for the prom. But it only had a 351 4V engine and a C-4 transmisson.
With these two cars and some very good drivers and teams Ford dominated NASCAR in 69 winning 26 races including Firecracker 400, Daytona, Southern, Dixie, Carolina, National 500'sand the Yankee 600 to name a few. Richard Petty sent a new record at Riverside in his Talladega.Other drivers included LeRoy Yarbrough, Cale Yarbrough, David Pearson, and A.J. Foyt.
If you wonder why I have not mentioned Chevrolet in this it is because they were few and far between in 69. Only 3 Chevies started the Daytona 500 in 1969.
