Mod choice agony

Here is the deal, I want to step up the mods in the truck. I am happy with how it runs now, but I would be more happy with more power. Here is the kick in the sack. I do not have the cash for the short block or to buy the parts and build it myself (nor would I want to in my nice weather daily driver/weekend warrior). What I do have cash to do is port the eaton and do cams. This leads to the bottom end problem. With what I have and adding ported eaton and stage II cams should put me in the 450-470 rwhp. While I like the way those numbers look, I also dont like them. I know 450 is the number that people like me (stock block and no money for new motor) should not go over. But I really want to do both. I want the not stock, semi lopy idle and I want the ported s/c. I also want 11s in stock block form with reliability (if there is such a thing). Basicly, I want more power but cant pay to play much more. I know the risks. Thats why I am here. I need to know what your opinions are on the subject. Should I try to push the edge on the stock block knowing I am screwed if it grenades? Can it be safe to take it to the edge knowing I beat the truck like a governmet mule when I drive it. Will the trans hold up? Its killing me.

I know, poo in one hand and want in the other. right?

Chris

I think you have asked the million dollar quetion......

That is the million dollar question. I am running 15 psi on a ported blower, a few other mods and I run it hard.....Lots of oil changes, fuel filter every 12 months, I crank and let it idle for 5 minutes or so before driving it after it has been parked and cooled down. I have a work car, so I guess mine is a weekend warrior. K&N cold air, KB boost-a-spark, SBTB, C&L intake, no cats, x-pipe and twin flowmaster stage II's. Now I have added a 160 thermo, EGR delete, pcv bypass, boost bypass. PSP tune......Happy, no problems. My next mod will be a KB boost-a-pump and then tranny stuff (stall, Valve body). I have a buddy with 120,000 miles on his and almost the same setup......He ran it with a lean code for a while (explain that) and never has had a major mechanical problem....Nobody knows the real answer, his is a 99 and runs great. You wont be happy until you do it but it is a risk...no way to really tell, thats just my experience......BTW I have multiple high speed kick downs....

I guess the real question is: are you wanting to add cams for just the sound, or for more power? If only for the sound, you're doing it for the wrong reason. If for more power, you may not have the "supporting hardware" to justify cams, i.e. heads, etc.

You've heard it a thousand times - gotta pay to play. If you're going to hang your toes over the edge of the cliff, you better have a parachute if you fall.

First, we can help you at www.miloc.org (michigan lightning owners)

Second, you don't want a lobing cam, that lobe comes from overlap in the intake and exhaust valve. that is great for n/a vehicles, but sucks ***** for supercharged ones. You notice (and if you do some research) jdm stated within the last week the cam spec they use to get Max power, and it's not a stage 3.

There is always Nitrous, Wydopnthrtl is running 11's on a stock block and a 4# lower. so when he wants a little extra he has it, but for normal driving it is very reliable.

I heard that!! (it's a southern saying )

IMO nitrous is a very very good bang for the buck on a stock motor. As long as it's setup and used with some smarts you can have your cake and eat it too.
