Post 1st run with LS1

Well my first run with an LS1 happend tonight.

Can't call this one a kill, but it was virtually even. I have been waiting to race one since i got my truck.

We ran quite a few times. The first run was with him coming up behind fast. I saw those unmistakable LS1 headlights weaving in and out of traffic behind me. He was probably two or 3 car lengths behind me and i knew he was going to try and pass, so i floored it. He didnt fall behind but he wasn't gaining either. Came to a red light and turned back down the street. this time we ran from about 40 or 45. Took it up to 95 and he still wasnt up to my bumper by the time i let off (scared of cops). To be fair he was about 2 car lengths behind when we hit it. Slowed down to about 45 and he was cruising right next to me for a while. He would goose it but i didnt do anything, then i heard him gear down, then i punched it. I put about 2 car lengths on him and let off. Finally (I had fun with this guy), we raced from a light. This was dead even. I jumped out a little ahead from the start, hit some bumpy road and lost traction and spun, thought he was pulling a little but we went through the next light even (he did have to switch lanes for slower traffic). Got to the next red light at the same time.

Sorry for long post.

Overall i thought it was great. My truck is totally stock so i didnt expect to run so evenly with him. To give credit where credit is due I think he would have pulled me given enough road.

Oh yeah, there was another camero (have no idea what it was) that tried to keep up with us but couldn't.

Very pleased with these results.

I'm not too heavy into the F body Camaros and Firebirds. How do we tell the difference from the body between and LS1 and an LT1 powered F body?

Yoda,

I didn't think his exhaust sounded stock but i am no expert. I did see some stickers on his fender but don't remember what they said.

Cool

The Rice-Boy Page says stickers make your car go faster.

Just look at the hood for the Ram Air scoop, if it's there its a LS1( SS for the Chevy WS6 for the Pontiac).

All of the '98 and newer F bodies with a V8 are LS1 powered. Twin tailpipes are the easy tipoff for V8 engines. The Camaro SS and Formula/T/A WS6's have an additional 15 HP, and are rated at 320. My wife drives a '99 Firebird Formula, LS1, 6 speed, Hurst, and driving it back to back with my '00 L., I'd give a very tiny edge to the F body. Small enough difference that it could be made up by individual vehicles, driver skill, or reaction time.

Moonshine is correct. My brother has a '99 Ram-Air car. I know how fast it is. ;-)

As far as LT-1 vs. LS-1...a bone stock Lightning with any traction will absolutely crush a stock LT-1 F-body...at least to 120-130mph.

At the track I race at, stock LT-1s run ~14.1-14.4s. Stock Lightnings run 13.8-13.9s. LS-1s if driven properly will hit mid-13s. These are average times I've noticed given the same weather conditions. Drop the temps down to 40^F here in N. Texas and everybody picks up .2. :-)

Do $700 in mods to an LS-1 and it can run high-12s easily, though.

The 98 Camaro SS and Pontiac WS6 had single exhaust that year and then they switched in 99. The easy way to tell on camaros is by the front end. Look for the big guppy looking mouth and it is a new one. They are easliy marked if they have the LS1 ( hence the Z28 or SS emblem on the fender, V6 's dont have any badging) As for the Trans am, well you will have a tougher time unless you just see the Ram Air hood or the badging.
