Post 00 Lightning - My First Impressions

KGM suggested I post a message about my likes and dislikes so here goes..

Now that I've had a day to experience my new Lightning I will try to give you my first impressions.

Keep in mind this is all coming from a car guy who has never owned a truck before. I own a 96 Cobra which I do a lot of open track events with, and I bought the Lightning because I wanted a fun a daily driver / tow vehicle.

I was planning to buy a super-duty, but my wife suggested that I would not enjoy driving a big truck on a daily basis and said I should consider getting a Lightning.

FIRST, THE BAD STUFF:

I would like to begin by saying that most of the bad stuff is just little nit-picky things and none of it really matters that much to me. That said, I've tried to capture all of the things I noticed, no matter how trivial it seemed:

1. The steering column is a little too far to the left, so that when I adjust the tilt where I want it, the boost gauge is hidden by the steering wheel. I'm not sure if this is just a problem with my truck or all of them, or just because of the way I fit in it.

2. The stereo's volume control doubles as the on/off switch. Invariably I hit a bump while trying to adjust the volume and turn the darn thing off. The rest of the controls seem pretty well done to me, even though there is no labeling on the "Tune" button to indicate it can be used to select the CD disk (I figured it out right away as it was the first obvious button to try).

3. The factory stereo sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. This is probably to be expected, but the Mach 460 in my Cobra is a lot better. This is no big deal for me because I plan to put one rockin' aftermarket system in my bolt soon.

4. The overhead console is cool, but I was hoping it would include a full trip computer, instead of just temperature and compass. This is probably being a little picky for a performance oriented vehicle, but my $22k mini-van came with a cooler console, and I will be doing a lot of towing on long trips.

5. The drivers side window and lock buttons are right under my fingertips, which is convenient when I need to adjust them, but I have to be careful not to hit them accidentally. My Cobra is the same regarding this, and I'd like the controls to be a little farther forward so I have to reach a little bit to adjust them. This is probably not a problem for taller people (I'm 5'8"), because they would have the seat back further and the controls would probably be positioned perfectly for them.

6. The power driver's seat controls are not positioned very well. They are a little hard to find and the distance between the seat and the door panel is a little narrow above the controls, making them a little difficult to access when the door is shut.

7. The doors seem a little hard to close. You have to conciously put some effort behind it to make sure they close all the way. This is probably just me as I'm a car guy who has never owned a truck before, and I'm used to closing my car doors *gently*. Same thing with the tail gate. On other trucks, I've always tried to shut the tail gate by opening the latch, closing the gate, and releasing the latch. With the gate on my bolt, I *have* to slam it a little to get it to catch.

8. Fit and finish issue: where the back bumper wraps around there is a joint where the side step meets the bumper. On my driver's side, it not quite flush by about 1/2". The passenger side is perfect. Not sure if anything can be done to fix this, but its like the step is sticking out a little to far from the body. This is kinda picky but it is fairly noticeably and I noticed it right away.

9. I don't like the way the glove box tries to spring closed by itself. I'd rather it just stayed all the way open until I was ready to shut it.

10. I wish I could turn the fog lights on independently. I rewired my Cobra to allow this (before I ditched the fog lights for brake cooling ducts), but it looks like the switch design on the Lightning will prevent any such mod. Oh well, I hardly ever used the fog lights by themselves anyway.

THE GOOD STUFF:

1. First and foremost... THIS TRUCK ROCKS!!!!!

2. The power is very deceiving. I'm used to my Cobra, and the accelleration of the Lightning feels quite a bit different to me. It doesn't seem like you are going as fast as you really are.

3. The blower whine isn't very noticeable until you get on it, at which point it turns into music. Who needs a radio with one of these things?

4. The factory exhaust note is very nice. I like the exhaust sound better than my Cobra's exhaust sound. Its a nice low burble when you are tooling around, and it blends nicely with the blower and engine noise when you are into the throttle.

5. The seats are even better than I had hoped. The lower back side bolstering is excellent, even better than my Cobra. The lateral leg support is fair. The seats are very comfortable and the suede leather covering is nice and soft. Everyone who has ridden with me so far has liked the seats alot.

6. The transmission is great. It seems very willing to downshift when you want it to. The shifts are nice and smooth under part throttle conditions, but nice and snappy when you are on it.

7. The auto headlight feature was an unexpected bonus, same for the auto door lock feature.

8. I wish my Cobra had as good a front suspension design as the Lightning does (SLA).

9. I've got around 100 miles on it so far, and the engine really seems to be loosening up and getting stronger and stronger.

10. I have read here that the 00s are indicating more boost than the 99s. The boost guage does seem to peg all the way up to 10. I don't know if the 2000s are making more boost or if the gauge is just calibrated differently, but I like it regardless.

11. The ride and handling is much better than I had hoped. The ride seems just about right to me, and the handling seems pretty responsive. I'll have a better idea after I get it out on the race track, but I'm certainly happy with the way it performs on the street so far.

12. This thing turns heads! I'm amazed at how many stares I've gotten in just a day of driving. The Cobra looks like just any other Mustang to most people, while the Lightning looks like ONE BAD ASSED TRUCK to just about anyone. People notice you coming and stare at you as you drive by. I especially like getting the looks from the guys in Chevy trucks.

All in all, I'm very pleased with my Lightning. It meets or exceeds all of my expectations.

To me, the best thing about it is that my wife and kids seem to like it A LOT. They were never very thrilled about the Cobra. I think that says a lot.

Thumbs up

Go back up and read number 12 (on the pros side) and then repeat after me. "Life is good after being struck.... Life is good after being struck.... Life is good after being struck.... "

The bad part is.. I've had my truck 8 months and it still turns heads all the time.. I'm almost desensitized to the whole thing, yet everyday somewhere someone makes a comment.

My ex girlfriend hated my truck (she was wierd... and is now an ex) She poked fun at me for buying it... 26 Grand for that damn thing.. I heard it all the time.. Of course, after 4 months of people stoping us all the time to comment on the truck... she had alot of crow to eat.. it's all good "Life is wonderful after being struck"

I only see <20 to >120 on the Speedo myself.

Yes it does, but I got a unit MD and wow $2800 is not wasted!

4. The overhead console is cool, but I was hoping it would include a full trip computer, instead of just temperature and compass. This is probably being a little picky for a performance-oriented vehicle, but my $22k mini-van came with a cooler console, and I will be doing a lot of towing on long trips.

I have 11.5" hands and have to open the door just to adjust the seat?

7. The doors seem a little hard to close. You have to consciously put some effort behind it to make sure they close all the way. This is probably just me as I'm a car guy who has never owned a truck before, and I'm used to closing my car doors *gently*. Same thing with the tailgate. On other trucks, I've always tried to shut the tailgate by opening the latch, closing the gate, and releasing the latch. With the gate on my bolt, I *have* to slam it a little to get it to catch.

Common problem with the right door!

8. Fit and finish issue: where the back bumper wraps around there is a joint where the side step meets the bumper. On my driver's side, it not quite flushes by about 1/2". The passenger side is perfect. Not sure if anything can be done to fix this, but its like the step is sticking out a little to far from the body. This is kind of picky but it is fairly noticeably and I noticed it right away.

9. I don't like the way the glove box tries to spring closed by it. I'd rather it just stayed all the way open until I was ready to shut it.

No problem here?

Um? This isn't rice rocket stuff is it? They are now your best friends, not!

THE GOOD STUFF:

1. First and foremost... THIS TRUCK ROCKS!!!!!

2. The power is very deceiving. I'm used to my Cobra, and the acceleration of the Lightning feels quite a bit different to me. It doesn't seem like you are going as fast as you really are.

Wait until about 3000 miles, totally different beast!

3. The blower whine isn't very noticeable until you get on it, at which point it turns into music. Who needs a radio with one of these things?

4. The factory exhaust note is very nice. I like the exhaust sound better than my Cobra's exhaust sound. It’s a nice low burble when you are tooling around, and it blends nicely with the blower and engine noise when you are into the throttle.

5. The seats are even better than I had hoped. The lower backside bolstering is excellent, even better than my Cobra. The lateral leg support is fair. The seats are very comfortable and the suede leather covering is nice and soft. Everyone who has ridden with me so far has liked the seats allot.

6. The transmission is great. It seems very willing to downshift when you want it to. The shifts are nice and smooth under part throttle conditions, but nice and snappy when you are on it.

Transmission (99) sucks, call SAL NOW!

The boost gauge does seem to peg all the way up to 10. I don't know if the 2000s are making more boost or if the gauge is just calibrated differently, but I like it regardless.

We all agree that the boost gauges are different but I pull 12, suspect buys the way, it's off the gauge?

11. The ride and handling is much better than I had hoped. The ride seems just about right to me, and the handling seems pretty responsive. I'll have a better idea after I get it out on the racetrack, but I'm certainly happy with the way it performs on the street so far.

The 99 Lightning is known for being fast but, I catch most corvettes in the corners, then they try to follow me on the straights for a race! HA HA!

Now a Lightning can't totally out handle a vet but it's kind of close, so use it to your advantage!

You'll find you're self only looking at most expensive cars to see if they are looking back.

All in all, I'm very pleased with my Lightning. It meets or exceeds all of my expectations.

To me, the best thing about it is that my wife and kids seem to like it A LOT. They were never very thrilled about the Cobra. I think that says a lot.

Alan, good write-up. The one thing I would like to see is two Recarro style bucket seats. I do not find the seats do a good job in the corners, but are very comfortable on long trips.

Cool

Hey Allen,

The Lightning was not available when I bought my truck so I got the '98 with the STX (sport) package. I would like to have one of these beasts, but maybe in a few years.

However, I ran across the SCOA web site the other day and mentioned it to my wife who drives a 97 Cobra convertible that we recently purchased used. She is very interrested in joining and is enjoying your site so far. I thought it was great that you use the same Message Board software as this site and I will be visiting there quite often as well while planning all the mods to our Cobra.
