Question Manual Upshift vs "D"

Had my brand new "L" about 5 days, less than 400 miles on her, 2 young kids pull up in a Z28 & ask if I wanted to race . Went out in the country where a 1/4 mile is marked on the hiway. First time I took off in "D", they left at 2 1/2, I left at about 3 1/2. They pulled me about 3 cars out of the hole and that is about where we finished. Next time I took off in "1", pulled them out of the hole, took it up to red line, shifted to "2" and it was like I put the breaks on, sounded like the valve's were floating.

What was it? Do you all race in "D" or manual upshift? If manual, where do you shift?

Thumbs down

You have found the wonder's, of the 4R100.
The trans will not upshift, a manual 1-2 shift. This is under full throttle of course. I put in a TransGo shift kit, but this did not fix that problem. The manual valve in the 4R100, does not work like the old non-computer tranny's do.

This is what id did before the superchip to avoid that "problem" put in drive and wait for the second shift. After second manually put into 2nd.Let it wind out till the tach hits 4800 then shift back to drive. This allows the truck to shift about 200 rpm higher than normal. It is good for another 5mph in 2nd.Also works even better in 3rd because the rpms arnt going up as fast and can be more easily timed. This is good for another 8mph in 3rd.
2-3 shift 5mph
3-4 shift ....from 110 stock-120mph manual

The best thing to do is get a superchip. You will NEVER have to mess with the shifter again. The truck shifts at 5700 in all gears and is a nice firm shift!!!!!!!

My trans shifts from second to thrid at 80-85mph, into fourth 115-120mph. I have learned (after hitting limiter). If I pull down in 1 then take off(helps keep from going into second gear if spinning),at 4000rpm(if tires are hooking).Computer will then do it's owen shift. Helped get past spinning, without shifting into second, and getting lug from going into second to fast.

I hate the secong gear blues. When it shifts early i really get mad. With my superchip My truck will shift at 90mph 3rd and 125 4th everytime. Those are great numbers compared to stock. It automatically shifts at 5700rpm.I also notice my truck doesnt get the early second gear shift nearly as much now.No word of a lie,If i punch it from a standstill or a 2-5mph roll,My truck will completly burn right thru 1st and second to about 4000rpm(2nd) for about 1.5 telephone lengths. My truck is so fast now.I think i am going to have a tuff season at the track. Before the chip my truck would always spin a little then either keep chirping to the 5200 shift point or it would keep chirping right into the early second shift specially over small bumps. It would never before burn and i mean burn *THROUGH* 2 gears.

Stock.....2-3= around 73-75max
Stock.....3-4= around 110-112max

Manual shifting will produce boost shut down if you over rev, even at red line. When you shift RPM jumps up just enough to hit rev limiter and the truck will "fall on its face". Use drive and from a dead idle, no power take off. Should hook up and not spin tires to much. Try it again but your self, practice makes perfect.
