Post Has anyone tried installing Electric Fans

Is it possible for a electric fan to cool our beast and if so what fan is the best on the market. I heard that our Lightnings on a hot day needs about 5000 CFM to keep it from overheating in City traffic. If this is the truth then we would force to use dual electric fans. If anybody has more info on this topic please shed some light. I'm wanting to make this mod if it can be done safely.

Later,
Terry

asdeman,

Don't know about anyone installing electric fans, however, word of caution: DO NOT install the electric fans that have the plastic pins that push through your radiator and then have the fan mounted right to the fins. The pins will rest on the cooling tubes in the radiator and eventually put holes in them.

Terry,

I considered last summer, putting a pair of electric fans on the intercooler radiator, but after some thought (and some feedback) decided against it.

Last July-August here in Houston was brutal! It was reported to be 103* on the radio, but I was stuck in the middle of 5 lanes of traffic, on concrete that had baked in the sun all day long. It was closer to 115 or more on the freeway. I was in my brand new black truck, a/c cranked on full blast, sitting in traffic on Highway 59 for over 90 minutes. This was after having made a speed run around the Beltway (Houston's infamous toll road/loop, great driving surface actually) and sat there worrying that the truck was gonna boil any second. I kept my eyes glued to the temp gauge and it never budged, not even a little bit.

Once I got out of the traffic and clear of the neighborhood, I ran her flat out to get home and check under the hood, I figured the temp gauge was busted and lieing to me.

I popped the hood and gingerly touched the blower housing, expecting to get burned immediately. It didn't happen.

The housing was hot, but not so hot it was immediately dangerous to skin. I let it sit, shut down, but with the key on (so I could read the gauges) and expected to see the temp climb like a fighter jet. Again, it didn't do it. It just cooled off normally and was a happy camper the next time I started her up.

The whole point to this missive is: If it didn't happen then, under the worst possible combination of conditions I can think of, it probably won't happen, unless there is something seriously wrong in the coolant system. Ford seems to have finally gotten past their famous propensity for over-heating. Hooray!

Just .02 worth (plus $5.00 for a tip)....

P.S. Point 2: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don't think the HP gain is significant enough to warrant taking the chance IMHO.

I know that HIGH RISK had put 2-14" (I think) elec. fans on his L. He used to visit this board occasionally, maybe when the racing starts up again here in Michigan.

Hey Terry, Sal here. I haven't done it yet, but it is on my list of future prducts to test. When I had the stock fan off to put the new motor in, I observed that the stock fan weighs a TON!! Gotta be like 20-25lbs. I'd definately do it.

I have to agre with "the Wyldman" on this one. Last summer I develped a leak around the block heater and was loosing coolant for about 2 weeks. It only leaked when I was moving so I never noticed until I checked under the hood one day and saw the reservor was empty. Well when I went to top it off, I ended up putting just over 8 liters of coolant in her. Needless to say I promptly took it to get fixed, but during the whole time it was low the temp gauge never went over normal. We didn't have 103 temperatures but I am sure some of those days during that 2 weeks were at least 95 sitting in trafic.
