Lightbulb Step by Step Improvements

For the new members who are considering the many options for going faster could those who have the data answer the following:

1. Dyno/et.mph stock chip vs aftermarket

2. Dyno/et.mph intake and filter vs stock or with/out chip

3. Dyno/et.mph Intercooler improvements

4. et.mph Gears

5. Dyno/et.mph Last baseline vs Ported heads or flow improvements.

6. NOS et.mph with and without and size of load.

7. Traction et. reduction with/without

This would be helpful for people like me. The searches bring up alot of data but it would be nice to see all of this info in one place (i.e.) this post.

MNLightning,

There are many posts on these subjects, but if you search on my name specifically, you'll find a lot of what you want to know. For an equally succesful, but different approach, see isa4325's posts. MrBBQMan also has a considerable depth of knowledge to read on. Wes Tarbox's posts are another place to find many good tips (few though they are, he doesn't hang around here much).

The best and truest data can be found under Lightning Tuner's posts. Mucho bueno info to be had there.

Thumbs up

I'll post the little information I have regarding this. I've done only 2 mods to my truck and I've only raced it at the strip twice...dyno'd it one time.

Bone stock it made 350rwhp/431rwtq. The pulls were made in 3rd gear w/ overdrive turned "off". The trans did not downshift, so there is no silly spike anywhere (which doesn't count if we're being realistic). With only the Superchips CUX1 module it made 362rwhp/444rwtq.

I do NOT know what this is SAE net at the flywheel. I don't get into arguments based on % lost through the drivetrain, etc. I'd guess its easily 400+ at the flywheel, though.

This doesn't sound like a big increase with the chip. BUT (!) as many have said there's more to it than peak power figures. The transmission shifts tons better at full throttle. No more lag. This alone helps ETs big time...probably as much as the improved engine management programming. The power increase over the entire rev range is improved...you feel that as well. It's like driving a different truck. I was VERY skeptical before I installed it and drove it.

Sal's chips will do the same thing, of course. I'm more than happy with mine, and the track #s don't lie. You have several good choices regarding chips and I highly recommend this as the first mod you do. You will not be sorry and if you think the truck is quick now, just wait. I installed mine with 800 miles on the odometer and never looked back. It has 4500 miles now (had the L for 6.5 months now) and have no complaints at all.

Track #s with just the chip look like this:
Conditions...average. We had a headwind, the air was decent, but not outstanding. The 10-15mph headwind KILLS trap speeds, but doesn't have as much of an affect on 1/4 mile ET.

Made one pass without the chip...13.96 @ 97.40mph. With chip alone on the same day...
13.65 @ 99.8mph. I believe the trap speeds would have been 101.xx had there been no headwind.

Since then I have installed one of Sal's filter/inlet tube kits. Well constructed piece, good job of powdercoating. I have had no problems with the ACT bung, as some have reported. took literally 15 minutes to remove the stock unit and bolt this in.

Results are 2+psi increase in max boost (and possibly across the rpm range...never documented it). Have not been to the dyno, but have made it to the track.

Conditions: outstanding. Temps 45-55^F, baro. pressure over 30.xx", sticky track.

13.204 @ 103.37mph. D'oh! Consistent 13.3-13.4s even after everything warmed up.

Total $$ invested is ~$500. Tough to beat, IMO. Hope this helps some. Wish I had more documentation for you.

Wes thanks for the post I was browsing a couple of GN sites and they have benchmarked each mod stage with results. I don't spend to much time online and the search brings up alot of info but most is chatter.

No word on when mine will arrive..

Wes,

Do you think your dyno numbers would have been different if your truck would have had some "learning" time? Mike from Performance Products says that it can take up to 1K miles before the engine can take full advantage of the chip.

Jack77,

That is a very good question. I do not remember how many miles I'd put on the truck with the chip installed when I dyno'd it. Hmm...should have paid more attention.

Just by looking at the date on my dyno sheet, I'd say I probably did NOT have 1k miles on the engine since the chip had been installed.

I agree with others who feel that the engine loosens up a bit after 3-4k miles. I've installed enough new motors in late model Mustangs to know that this typically is indeed the case. I'm sure that also had something to do with my improved times at the recent track visit.
