Thumbs up What to Do First?

Just picked up my 2000L (silver) from the dealer this afternoon. I was impressed by the quality of the vehicle compared to my old Cobra. The paint was much nicer, the exhaust sounded meaner and there is no sweeter sound than a supercharger under full throttle . First things first, the stock stereo has to go. Any good suggestions on a replacement? I'm going to look at the EEC tommorrow to see if it's the same as the 99's (gotta get a chip from Sal). I'm betting that I can manage to keep this thing stock for at least 2 weeks.

Actually, if you have the 6CD changer, the factory head unit sounds really good but you have to replace the stock paper speakers. And I'd get a superchip and airraid ASAP.

UxtrulStick,

How do you like the Lightning compared to the Cobra? I am going to be trading in my '00GT for a Lightning in the summer. How is it speed wise?

Cool

The very first thing you should do is POST A PICTURE of your silver Lightning so the rest of us can see it!

Matt,

I wouldn't say the truck is any faster than the Cobra, it's just a different sensation of speed. The Cobra had a rush of power after you hit 4k, the L seems smoother and is deceptively quick. Driving the L you can definitely tell that you're in a 4600lb truck, but that's part of what makes it cool, try towing a trailer with a Cobra! (which is why I bought the L, to tow my soon to be purchased drag car to and from the track in style). Initially, I had no intentions of buying a L, but my dealer had a major accident with the Cobra road testing "The Fix". They offered me full credit towards any ford vehicle to replace my loss, so of course I chose the coolest and most practical option, a new L.

Sixpipes,

I would love to post a picture, but unfortunately I have neither a digital camera or scanner. Guess you'll have to wait a couple more days for a pic of the silver L's. I can say that you're going to like what you see. Also, where did you buy your hood from (it's sweet!)? My L came with a big scratch in the hood. I am seriously considering buying an aftermarket hood and have the dealer paint an install it instead of repairing the stock piece.

UxtrulStick,

Were you the guy who's dealer crashed the cobra into the ditch? The guy who did it got fired on the spot or something?

I think I read it on MW or the Corral.

Which do you like more? The Cobra or the L?

UxtrulStick,

What city and state did you purchase your L from?

You will also be surprised at how the Lightning runs against the Cobra. At my local track, the first night I ever saw a Lightning, there were two there and they were running better times than several Cobras that night. Both Lightnings were totally stock at the time.

Congrats on your new L. I'm still waiting on mine.

Uxtrulstick: Take your film to K-mart(probably most developers) and they have an option of getting your pictures additionally on 3.5 floppy or CD for a couple $$$ more.

UxtrulStick -

If you think your Lightning is fast right now, just wait another 4,000 miles. The engines are extremely tight when new and will really start to come on when they're broken in. I was initially disappointed with the performance after I read all the stuff on this board. However, I am extremely happy now.

Amen to sixpipes comment. When I picked up my L at the lealer last June, I was really disappointed at the performance during the test drive. As it broke in, it changed considerably. Now it is a monster truck.

Matt,

Yeah, I posted up at MW after the dealer did the number on my Cobra. It's a shame too because I really did like that car. The L is already starting to grow on me, hopefully everyone is right and it will really start to pull after I get it broken in and install a chip+filter. Either way you can't go wrong. I guess I'm biased towards the L though just because I've haven't seen another 99+ L around here yet (Des Moines, IA).

UxtrulStick,

I too replaced my stereo less than 500 miles after I bought my '99 last August. Didn't want to spend as much $$ as I have in my Cobra, but went with something really clean. I do not like the pounding bass you can hear 4 miles away, but that's just my taste.

I went with one of Alpine's better in-dash CD units (single disc...lost my changer which being behind the passenger seat was useless with my short arms), Alpine speakers in the front and back and two Kicker 8" subs with 2" tweeters mounted in the boxes. I had to remove the plastic storage compartment behind the seats, but the two boxes fit neatly back there. Also ran two Kicker amps (one 50 and one 100w 2-channels) for power. Again, its not top-of-the line audiophile stuff, but its far, far superior to stock and is clean sounding with plenty of bass for the good acoustics of the truck cab.

Matt-OO GT...

The Lightning is easily as quick as a stock '96-98 Cobra, if not faster. With $400 in mods, my truck runs 13.20s w/ consistent 1.92-1.95 60' times on stock tires. If I had to race it with my Cobra and didn't have the blue bottle working, the Lightning would beat it, I believe.

The biggest thrill of this truck, IMO, is downshifting into 2nd at 55mph on the highway. It absolutely comes alive and with the gearing doesn't shift into 3rd til 85mph.
