I think if we liked them, we would still own them. Everyone on this site is pro-L, that is why we are here!! Good luck!!

Thumbs up

First problem is that they are GMC, which in my book is the same as a Chevy. Be prepared to spend lots of money on broken trannies and various other driveline parts (speaking from experience).
The Syclone/Typhoon are great trucks overall and will beat about anything they are up against from stoplight to stoplight. Go to www.syty.org and take it all in. Subscribe to their e-mail list, but not until after you read all the FAQ's

You can e-mail me if you want more info!

I had a 91 Syclone and loved it. I had no big problems and it was fast.

I had a 91 Syclone and it was a fun pickup. I didn't have any problems with it. The advantage they have over a Lightning is very quick off the line and throught first gear, a better shifter, and if you ever get caught on ice or snow they are excellent. They also get about 5 miles per gallong better gas mileage. THe disadvantages are hardly any cab room, little carrying capacity and no towing capacity. I dont think they look as sharp as a lightning either. A nice low miles one will cost you almost as much as a Lightning. I considered another Syclone or typhoon but after seeing the condition used ones were in and the prices I bought the Lightning!

Neither the Typhoon or Syclone with low miles will cost anywhere near what a Lightning does. You can pick one up with 25K-45K miles for between $12,000 and $18000 for a Syclone or $15,000 to $21,000 for a Typhoon.

They are fun trucks, but the vast majority of them are also high maintenance. The S15 platform wasn't reliable to begin with, and the addition of a lot of extra power and complicated driveline didn't do anything to help the reliability.

Basically, if you're willing to turn a wrench yourself, and you don't run it too hard, you shouldn't run in to major expenses with them.

Here's a link to a post I made a while back about the things to look for if you are buying a Sy or Ty.

Personally, if I had to have one or the other, I'd go for the Typhoon.

As far as towing I purchased a tow hitch for and towed a trailer with the Syclone. It hauled two quads for five years without any problems.

Ok here we go here is my review of my 92 Typhoon vs my 99 Lightning. http://www.oh.verio.com/~aaron/

See the: Ford's SVT F-150 Lightning vs GMC's Typhoon link.

Please don't send me tons of angry email. I just put this page up last week and got almost 500 hits from the Typhoon and Syclone mailing list. They send me 50 some emails about why the Ty/Sy is better. Keep in mind I have owned both and my subjective opinion follows at the web site.

I personally have never had any problems w/ my Sy(other than it being stolen) buy then again it was only a daily drive for about a yr. The warnings you have heard about the problems w/ them are true though, that's why so many of them are for sale on syty.org. That web page has a whole list of things to check out before you should purchase one, print it out. If it's not going to be a daily driver, you don't intend to haul anything but a$$ then you have my nod of approval. Word to the wise though, the Ty's had even more probs then the Sy's...Well that's what I heard.

My vote would be for the Ty. However, you should also look into the Gen 1 Lightning. You can find em for around 10K in great shape and they're much more reliable.

I would take the Typhoon over the Syclone. The Ty is more useful you can fit more people in it and it's nice to have the enclosed storage. In my comparison many of the things I like about the Ty are related to it being a sport utility and not a pickup truck. The Sy is slightly faster mainly due to the fact it weighs about 200 lbs less than the Ty.

I appreciate all of the comments that have been made good or bad.

One more question though, Is there any difference between the 92 and 93 typhoons???

Performance and driveline wise, there is no difference, but there are cosmetic differences.

The sides of the seats on 92's are cloth, whereas the 93 uses a fake leather material that makes the entire seat appear to be leather. The 93's had (as an option) cladding that matched the paint color instead of the grey color that 92's had. 93's also had an overhead console, elimination of the plastic rim around the door handle, inflatable POWER lumbar supports (Instead of the 92's manual units), power seats, and deletion of the roof rack, although it could still be had as an option.

If I had it to do over again, I would get a 93, just for the improved appearance.

I Have all 3, a white 1993 Typhoon, a pearl white 1991 Syclone, and a red 1999 Lightning. I love all three. The sy and ty are quicker 0 to 60 but the Lightning is faster. I would pick all 3, but I think that the Typhoon is alot more nice inside than the Syclone. The Ty come with leather, a CD player and alot more room. The Ty is also nice because you can recline your seat. Other than that, they are the same. Good luck with your pick.
