I'm back from the dark continent, er uh, east Texas (it's about the same). I only got 1 pass this weekend against an F body and it was a disaster! Every other pass I made was against Corvettes! I never stood a chance against most of those guys.

Beastie wasn't running very well, or I wasn't driving very well (more plausible).

I has traction problems all day yesterday. On the last pass (against the F body) I made a perfect launch, no wheelspin at all. The Beast came out like someone had lit her tail on fire. I counted 4, then hit the button, and she leaped again, again no wheelspin, just pure hook. 60 ft was 2.000, not great, but not bad either.

At the 1-2 shift, she fell flat on her face, engine shut down completely. I had this black sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach and all I could think was "THE CRANK, OH NO!"

I kicked her into neutral and let her coast down the track. When I got to the traps, I tried to start her again and all I got was a sick sounding attempt to turn the engine. I was almost ready to cry.

After she slowed some more (nearly stopped) I tried the key again and she started, rather sluggishly, but she did start and run fairly smooth again. Made it back to the hotel, no problems. I looked at every piece I could see under the hood and the motor and found nada.

By this time I was elated, then I was madder 'n h_ll, what the devil had gone wrong! I spent all night and all of the drive home trying to figure out what had happened. It was obviously electrical in nature (possibly PCM related?!) as the engine didn't stumble, it just quit, period.

Under full boost and in the N2O, it just quit. No backfire, no change in sound pitch, just instant silence as she settled back to the pavement. My one shot all day long of backing up my best time and it just took a dump all over me.

Man am I bummed! I need a consultation with the good Dr. Sal, ASAP! Can you say "Bad Race Day"?

Chuck,

Isn't there a shutoff if the trans fluid gets too hot or something similar in nature?

Chuck, did the motor actually shut OFF or did you lose boost. The failsafe mode will shut off boost and it usually happens on the 1-2 shift after a good burnout and a good launch. I've not heard of the motor actually shutting off though because of this. It then takes about 20-30 seconds, or a key cycle to shut off the failsafe mode.

Exclamation

Sal,

The motor quit. The power went away and the engine shut down and I had to coast the rest of the way down the track. I did get it to fire again as mentioned. I drove it back to the hotel yesterday and home today with no apparent problems. This one has me really bugged!

BTW, in my fit of pique, I neglegted to mention that meeting Wes Tarbox and his friend, Joe, was an absolute treat. They are both really nice guys and a good time was had by all, at least until, well you know.

Angry

Real sorry to hear that. I still think there is something in the PCM or EEC that will shut it back or off if you are to hard on this think. I did about 3 - 360's smoking the tires after putting on the pulley, let off headed out the parking lot and punched it, all I got was a half hearted effort out of the motor. Something is there! I ordered a set of CD's that have the whole shop manuel on them, maybe there is something in there? If it can be found we will find it.

Andre,

Thanks for the kind words. I would really like to see that set of CD's when you get them. I may want to order a set if they're not too outrageously priced.
