Raced a Silverado SS

A guy pulled up next to me late last night in a SS grinning from ear to ear, he rolls down his window and says "what's up!". I'm with my brother-in-law showing him the new truck ('04 6k miles bone stock) sitting in a left turn lane. I figured why not, when would I get a chance like this with no one around on a back street to run something like this? I tell my bro-in-law, guess he wants to race, just then the light turns green and he hits it. I let him get a truck length ahead and I hit it and go straight out of the turn lane. A few seconds later he is about 5 lenghts behind me. I slow down and let him catch up. He says "why did you have to do that to me, you should have turned left at the light". I just shook my head and laughed.

My thought is, if you have the knowledge of a sport like the SS or L, why would you try to race one you "SHOULD" know is faster? I could tell the guy was a little embarassed. I'm bone stock and I was amazed on how bad I beat the guy. I was expecting this guy to be modded if he was this excited to race. I mean, should I have even walked a stock SS this bad? I thought it was going to be much closer. Guess the power/weight isn't as close to the L as I thought.

may be he just had the ss decals on his truck, or you have the bad *** truck all F-150 owners want, 9 times out of 10, a stock SS will out performe a stock 04 up F-150, throw 900 lbs in the back, than go drag racing and the F-150 will kick but.

I think the Silverado SS would make for some competition if it had the new corvette engine, and some suspension tuning. But I dont see chevy doing that in the near future.
BTW, nice kill!!

I am like others who have probably done their home work on the competition and have driven them as well. In my opinion the SS is a truck that is full of options until it comes to power. They are nice but are pretty doggy compared to an L.

Waste of time wins are what I call them

Well if you were not a lightning and just a regular 04 5.4 fordv8 I would say no the SS would have killed you. He was not racing you....you were racing him. Waste of time wins are what I call them but a win non the less.

I would have to agree with cyclonevampire. I raced the SS 3 times back to back at stop lights and there was no way I was picking up 5 truck lengths after being down 1. Not saying it couldnt happen but my truck isnt stock and it hooked up everytime.

HI!... Well I don't know about you guys but I have raced many CHEVY SS trucks and destroyed all of them. I don't have a LIGHTNING. I have a "99' F-150 with a built 5.4 now (425H.P). But my old 5.4 was only making 340H.P at the flywheel and I used to beat them by like 5-8 truck lengths. They only run about 15.00 - 15.80E.T depending on the driver. They are slow and over rated 345H.P.

good kill, but yeah they're not quick which is why i didn't buy one (I *was* a chebby guy until recently).

yesterday i was at a track with terrible prep running like 8.3s (1/8th mi of course). not much of a problem on my hoosiers, but i took them off to go home and went for one last run. lined up beside a 50s model chevy truck. i spun the entire way down the track. it was like i was on ice with my F1s. my blower was like WEEEE.... WEEEE.....EEEE WEEEEEEEEEE...WEEEEEEE on and off the gas. i ran a 9.6 and got beat bad. i immediately hot lapped following him back to the lanes, i was so pi$$ed and whooped him with an 8.6 but got real sideways at the 330ft but I kept my foot into it

anyway, so what do the new vettes run?? stock, that is?

I believe the C6's run high 12's. New Z06 is a MONSTER at $53k 11.8_@_125+

How do the SS (crew-cab) and the HD stack up against eachother?

When I dyno'd my little '99 stock at 328hp (after owning an '03 - 496/562) the conversation started about how far stock L's have come from '99. He (my tuner) had dyno'd a stock '04 at 370 hp, yes at the rear.

You may have a particularly strong L, but still should have toasted the SS in my opinion.

D-Day
