Cool

Hey Nathan... I bought a set of 3.73's about a week ago, they are for a expedition, and it took a little looking by my buddy in the parts dept to get it right. All he needed was the axle tag # and then it was simple deduction. I'll look at work on monday, and post the kit # from Ford. it's pretty complete, even syn fluid, although you'll need to buy an extra qt. Price was 180.00, but that was with my discount. Ill get back to you. Shawn

Question

How about top speed? Does it change? I hear the Lightning is drag limited at 140, would 3.73 gears allow the engine to rev a little higher to make more power to increase the rpms? Besides, who needs to go 140? Getting there is the funnest. I think I remmeber reading that the Lightning can go from 0 to 140 in about 29.somehting seconds. neato

Cool Gears Question , hey isa4325!

I have heard of several 4.10 swaps but not the 3.73. Where did you get the parts, was it a tough install?

Also, any impressions on the diff between 3.73 and 4.10?

thanks

Thumbs down

If you have never set up a spicer gear before this is not the time to try. Without the proper dials and tools It would be a trial and error job. I would get some one with gear setup knowledge to do it. Local rearend shop, speed shop, or dealer.

Sorry this took so long. I did not see this post till Wyldman told me it was here.
The 3:73 gear was bought from Ford and was the only gear listed for the Lightning at the time. I love the difference, it made no noticeable change to top end (140) but did increase 60 foot time by 3 tenths over the stock 3:55, and helped launch the truck better with the slicks. Also showed a greater "G" pull on the G-Tech meter when launching. Do not like 4:10 for street because of fuel consumption. This truck calls for a gear change and my choice was 3:73, even ifvthe 4:10 would have been available I would not have chosen this gear. Just a personal thing. Would be a good choice for strip only if that was what I had bought this truck for. I ren a 4:56 in my 442 but only for Sunday's and drag racing. Again I appologize for taking so long to answer.
Sorry, $212.00 parts only, installed myself.

Tundra, who needs to go 140? I DO!
(havent ya seen the flyby ? )

Seriously though, I didnt want to go to 4.10s because of top-end and mileage concerns. 3.73s sound pretty good. I'll have to do the math though and see how they would affect RPM. My eventual goal is a 160mph lightning.

Cool

Nathan:

Top speed with 4:10's 160mph rpm:5434, this is right at the fuel shutoff/rev limiter. If you get a chip, they can raise the fuel shutoff a little higher. Cruise speed at 70mph are 2941 w/3.55's and 3396 with the 4.10's. This is in third gear Not overdrive. If you need od numbers, I can give you those.

When I had my 3.55's, the L was working pretty hard at 140mph. With the 4.10's it gets up there very easy and just pins the speedometer and I have to use the tac for reference.
