Does a 4lb lower pulley take an adapter on a 99?

Please,

Any help as quick as possible would help as I have already removed my stock pulley and am ready to install the new 4lb pulley. My question is this, Do I need an adapter for the new 4lb pulley for my 99 Lightning? I ask this question because in all the install instructions and threads that I have read, it states that the pulley is very snug and/or a tight fit. My 4lb lower is not snug, there is definitely some play and I remember the guy who sold it to me said something like "I can't remember if the 99's take the adapter or not" and then it seemed like he went and asked.

So do I need an adapter or not? I bought the 4 lb lower at Gabby's autowerks (GAW racing in Miami), if that helps anyone identify the pulley.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving,

Cesar

The 99-00s take a different pulley than the 01-ups. The balancer is different on the motor. The 99-00 has a smaller hole in the center of the pulley. You can "bolt" an 01-up pulley on a 99, but it's not suggested, as the pulley is supposed to center on the balancer hub.

Also, make sure you have removed the factory adapter off the balancer. There should be three bolts that attach it, and then you'll need to pop it off with a big screwdriver. The factory adapter has the big threads in it that the factory pulley attached to.

Check this out, it may help as well... PSP Gen 2 Pulley Install

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick reply Lightning tuner . That is correct. My pulley does not "center" on the hub. There is some play 1/8" or so. Does that mean that I bought an 01 and up pulley? And will it damage my truck now or in the future? or can I put this on for now and get the right pulley when they open on Monday?

Did I mention that I am in the middle of this install right now.

Thanks again,

Cesar

It sounds like you have an 01-up style. I would not install it if you plan to exchange it, as they may not take it back if it's been installed.

Some pulley makers now use the same pulley for all years, but use an adapter that snaps in the back of the pulley, for the 99-00 trucks. Maybe that's what they meant. Look on the back of the your pulley. If it has a machined recess, then it's one of the styles that uses the adapter.

If it's just for a couple days, you could probably get away with it. But I really don't suggest it. You want the load put on the hub of the balancer, not the bolts.

Good point. I knew there was a reason they mentioned that the fit was tight.

No, it does not have a machined recess. The adapter that I saw the counter guy pull out was one that slipped into the center of the pulley though. I should have asked for the adapter anyway or made sure with Gabby.

Don't you think that they would understand though. Afterall, it was their guys fault. I absolutely need to use my truck tommorow as it is my DD, and putting on the stock pulley back on just seems like much more of a PITA than the 4lber.

I guess I'll think twice about doing my next mod on a long 4 day weekend. Anyone have Gabby Szusters cell phone # handy? You can PM me or e-mail me if you do at cesar1@bellsouth.net.

Thanks for your help LT . Happy thanksgiving.
