Anyone with snow tires on L rims?
Anyone with snow tires on L rims?
Im having a very hard time finding a winter/snow tire that will fit on the 18" stock L rims... Does anyone have a snow tire on their stock rims?
And if so, what brand? size? Where did you get them?
Any info would be great, up here in the frozen north (Ontario, Canada) we had our first dumping of snow today and I came to realize I need new rubbers!!
Thanks
Marc

I use 16in rims and tires.
But Nitto has the Terra Grappler http://www.nittotire.com/tires_terragrappler.asp
in a 255/55 R18 that should fit. If you find a tire chart its close to stock.

A wide enough snow tire to fit a 9.5" rim is a really bad idea. The best solution is to get a Ford 16" steel rim (very cheap) and put a good snow tire on it. From personal experience, the Yokohama Geolander I/T is absolutely terrific on a Lightning and Nokia makes a great tire too.

I will never go back to the 18" setup. Far better in every respect. The handeling was a HUGE improvment. I am not convinced that the traction hasn't also improved. This is all related to unsprung weight and tire compliance.

I found a few 255/50/18 tires but isnt the width supposed to be 295? Isnt the general rule that you can go one size wider or thinner than stock? so like 305 or 285?
Do I even sound like I know what Im talking about?
???

2 years ago Michelin made an Alpine something or other that fit our rims, but it has been discontinued. This is my second winter on them and I will be getting Navi wheels and real snow tires next year. Its the better solution. I think these tires are 265/50/18 and they are too wide to be really useful in the snow.
And they were expensive too! The Navi rims and 16" snow tires as a package would have been less money.

For those who aren't experienced with snow tires, a wide contact patch is like a snowshoe and will float on top of the snow. This is contrary to hp summer tires or drag tire where you want the biggest contact patch possible for better traction. A 235 width is good and I would say that a 245 width is the max. After that, "Happy Snowshoeing!". Those sizes will not fit properly on 9.5" rims.
SickSRV If you live in Ontario, any good tire shop will tell you the same thing.
