Question Anyone Have a Lightning Front End Cover?

Hey guys and gals,

I am moving to Columbus, Ohio for a new job. I am wanting to get a front end cover for my Lightning. I have seen one at the Ford SVT online store and was wondering if anyone had tried it yet? Also, is there anywhere else I can get one? I don't want anything to scratch my front end, but I want to prevent scratches and rock nicks on my front end traveling the interstate.
Also, is there anyone out there in the Columbus, Ohio area with a Lightning?

Robby,

You'll like Columbus. It's a good town. My step-son lives and works there (Ohio State grad) and likes it a lot even though he's a surfer and loves to visit his mom and me here in Florida. Unfortunately, however, he drives a Jetta but I let him drive my L when he was here on Thanksgiving and now he wants to trade.

Robby,

If you are talking about a Bra that fits over the front of your vehicle, don't bother. Worst mistake I ever made was when I put one on a car of mine a few years age. At road speeds, grit, rocks and sand find their way underneath the cover, especially along the aft top edge. The Bra then flutters, grinding all of this debris into your paint. It ruined my hood and front end. The occassional nick from road rocks is much easier to fix.

Good luck with your move.

Instead of a cover or bra, you might consider using the film protection talked about here a while ago. I can't recall the name of the stuff,CRS is creeping up.

It's called Invinci-Shield and I love mine. I don't have a single mark on the front end of the Beast after 5 different roadtrips totaling almost 6k miles. It's a little pricey and a bit of a pain to detail, but it works great!

Robby,
I don't have a bra, but I do live in Ohio. Cincinnati is only 100 miles from Columbus.

Thumbs up

I'll second the votes for Invinci-Shield. The basic material is made by 3M. Their internal brand name for this clear plastic film is Scotchcal. The Scotchcal version marketed and installed by the Invinci-Shield folks is 8 mil thick and, like Wyldman says, it's tough as nails. I love mine and it's saved me from lots of stone chips and paint damage from lovebug juice.

It's a little expensive and it took the dealer 11 hours to install it in my garage, but I'd do it again.

Hey F150SVT - If you did it again, how much $$$ would it cost, installed and all. Thanks a bunch.

Cool

I paid $572 installed, plus tax, for the full kit (lesser coverage kits are available). Believe it or not, that's a good price. It can vary a lot. My neighbor used the same dealer/installer I used but paid more than TWICE what I paid for his Corvette and his Porsche Boxter and neither took any longer to install than mine nor used any more material (actually, not as much). It's a labor intensive procedure and very tedious and requires a practiced hand, so my advice is to have it professionally done. The model number for the full pre-cut kit for the '99+ Lightnings is #1537.

Check out the Invinca-Shield website cited above for full details. If you call the company, ask to speak with Beth McCormick in Customer Service and tell her I said hello. She will tell you if there is a dealer close to you and will send you a brochure, a schematic showing what areas on the truck can be covered, and a sample of the Scotchcal plastic film.

Mike
