Lightbulb Custom Chip for 99 Lightning

Hello all..

I have been reading about all the different success stories with the various chips for the new Lightnings.. I am just wondering if it would be worth it to get a custom Dyno tuned chip made instead..

I now there are difference in every truck.. I am just wondering how a " One size fits all " chip can cover these differences..

Has anyone burned a chip for their truck on a dyno ? Does anyone think it is worth the extra time and effort ?

Much thanks..

Dear Big Poppa,

The Superchip for the 1999.5 Lightning was dyno-tuned, track-tested, and dyno tuned again, track tested again, and back and forth until the final program was determined. The last change to that program was a couple months ago, when they did a change to accomodate those few Lightnings that exhibited detonation when running on low-energy winter fuel formulations.

The thing you have to remember is that every single one of the 4000 1999.5 Lightnings has the exact same computer, and the exact same software in it's computer, which is the CUX1 code, so there is no need to dyno-tune each individual Lightning, unless it's done to do a custom program for mechanical modifications to the engine of a particular vehicle.

Every Superchip is programmed for each individual vehicle, as we ask for your vehicle's computer code anytime you order a Superchip for any vehicle. The only exception to this lately is the 1999 Lightning, as they all have the exact same computer & software, so we do not need to ask the code, they are *all* CUX1. This happens with most SVT vehicles, like the Mustang Cobra, the SVT Contour, etc., where they will have only 1 code (sometimes 2) for the entire model year run, unike other F-150's, which will have *dozens* of different codes each model year, even for the same identical vehicle. SVT vehicles are made in very small numbers, they are not mass-produced like all other FoMoCo's, so they usually have only 1 code for a model year. Once in awhile you'll see maybe 2 codes for a model year.

I couldn't agree with you more, there is no one right program for all similar vehicles, and that is why Superchips makes a different program for each different computer code, so that you get the full benefit of a complete custom workup for *your* vehicle, and not some compromised program for all similar vehicles. With SVT vehicles however, you have far fewer differences between vehicles.

For example, even though the power output in the 1999.5 Lightning may vary from one example to the other, it's not as a result of it's computer programming, as they are all *exactly* the same from the factory in this case. from a programming standpoint.

I hope this helps your understanding of this a bit, and please feel free to call us if you'd like to discuss this in greater detail.

Not to take anything away from the superchip (i've got one and love it) but there is some tuning you can do to go one better than the superchip. See Andre's post on this thread regarding his custom setup:

Big Poppa, yes it can be done.
I'm looking at getting mine done, here in metro detroit at Alternative Auto Performance, it will cost ~550$ for the chip, dyno time (1-1.5 hours), and a Wide band A/F meter.
