popping in exhaust question...

when i let off the gas and coast, my exhaust pops like it has a bad miss. it pops a little bit when its idleing but nothing bad enough to raise concern. Is this normal. I have bassani equal length headers, high flow cats (only two not four), and two magnaflow mufflers. I'm guessing its normal because there is not much restriction of air flow with my set up. Just being cautious.

thanks
kurt

Kurt, I would only get that "popping" after WOT and reaching max boost (I was pushing 16lbs, KB, longtubes, 2 high flows and single maggy).

In fact during one of the "zoo crew" tune sessions in Miami - eight other L brothers heard the same, but I was the only L to make that "popping" even though other KB's were there that day - no one thought anything of it including a very experienced tuner.

Mine popped a TON more when I was running pig rich. After my Dyno tune it dramatically decreased. Jut throwin' that out there.

I dont have to be WOT to get the popping. I could be cruising along and let off the gas and the popping would start. I didn't think it was a big deal but you know how us L brothers are about our trucks. I think my tune could be bad, i know I'm running really lean. I'm getting that fixed as soon as REM has there power restored.

thanks

Hmm, it could be from a small hole in the exhaust system and not usually a lean condition, a rich condition can do it if you have an exhaust leak.. Usually its oxygen getting sucked into the system from an upstream exhaust leak. It's basically combustion happening in the pipes, and that can't happen without unburned fuel being present in the pipes, and then if you have an exhaust leak it uses that oxygen to ignite it with the heat of the exhaust. Remember that combustion has to have three things to happen, air, fuel, and HEAT. Hope this helps. BK

Excellent post man. This is what was happening to me. I had a 9.xx A/F and my Bassani crap-clamps had come loose. I still need to either weld or find a solution. I can see the soot around the clamps, so I KNOW it's leaking...

Ding Ding. This is correct. My old blower car ran rich (as most people tune them that way) Its just unspent gas getting ignited when it enters the exhaust pipe). It got worse with the Random Tech cats as it told the ECU to run even richer.

Hi guys

I used a small amount of high temperature jointing compound and this cured mine, plus some decent copper gaskets at the end of headers instead of the fibre ones.

A small tip - I used stainless steel nuts and bolts as the stock bolts seized up very quickly, the SS ones are easy to disassemble too.

Glad I could help, and as someone just mentioned, if you have any exhaust leaks before the o2 sensors it will run dead rich as the sensor reads the extra oxygen the gets sucked into the system. I've seen people use "quick steel" epoxy for a joining clamp repair, but if you can, just weld it. Mine is welded at all seams for that reason.
