Question Dyno Numbers

Just got back from Having the L dynoed(chassis) and was both supprised and dissapointed at the same time.
Stock setting on SuperChip: 331hp @4900 rpm
Performance setting: 337hp @ 4900 rpm
I thought there would be a greater gain (25hp claimed)from the chip. Anyone else have any ideas as to why the lack of hp?

Don't be suprised. If you check the old posts, back to about August and Septemper and you will see Horsepower and Torque numbers where the relative gain from the Superchip is not that great. A case in point my numbers were base horsepower of 341. Added the Superchip and gained 3 horsepower, added an K&N filter with a Pro-M meter and gained an additional 9 horsepower. Total horsepower was 353 and torque of 420 foot lbs. at the rear wheels on August 13,1999 and also on the same pull. The only reason That I state that is that some people like to quote their highest numbers even if there not from the same pull (it doesn't work that way). Additionally, all of this is old information because I have modified my chip based upon the dyno information and the flow data from the Pro-M meter. Problem is I have not spent any time on the dyno lately. Lets hope we can see data from others in a warmer climate.

Hey guys, Sal here. Being a chip tuner, let me say that some mail order chip making/selling is often difficult. Every vehicle is different in it's chip needs, even if you have two identical vehicles. A chip that works well on one person's stock 99 Lightning, may not work as well on another person's stock 99 Lightning. That is one of the reasons that it is important to have good support from who you buy your chip from, like Mike T. and myself offer. To make a "generic" mail order chip, means that we have to sell a version that will not cause any problems on people's vehicles. By this I mean if I had a truck in person to tune, I could put the A/F meter on and tune the timing and A/F ratios to optimum hp for that truck. But that program may cause detonation on someone else's truck. I'm sure you see the point. Just as a side note, I should have some interesting dyno data in the next week. A company called Beta Testing Services, which is a company that tests all sorts of products un-biasly and then sells the data to magazines and companys, is building a project 99 Lightning. They have tried a few chips so far. The Hypertech actually LOST power on the truck, and they then tried the Superchip, but after 5 reburn attempts, they still weren't happy with the performance, and were still having some problems, so they contacted Power Surge. I sent them a chip, and they still have to dyno it, but they said it feels much better. I'll post that dyno comparison graph when it's done.

Cool

Evening guys:

I have to agree with BABOLT and Sal, these darn trucks are all over the map when it comes to dyno runs. As posted way back when (July), mine was 304 without the chip (Superchip) and 329 with. That's a solid 25 hp, 7%, and the torque gain was consistent.
Now, my truck was quite low on stock horsepower compared to later builds, and this is pretty consistent as well.

As well, I got a very early Superchip and the timing and fuel mods were probably a bit on the aggressive side. I ran into detonation problems as soon as the winter fuel arrived and had to switch back to normal mode. I understand later chips from both suppliers may have been changed slightly to be a tad less aggressive.

I should say here, that although my "hot rodding" days were much more active 35 years ago, I still have the same understanding that when you start messing with something, there will always be some differences using the same equipment and differences in side effects. I don't let it bother me, and just try to work with the supplier to optomize my particular machine with whatever mods I have installed.

It may be that the oldest measuring stick is the best one. 35 years ago, almost none of us had access to a chassis dyno but we could usually find a strip to run at and get some real world timing slips. My take on at least two chips, three filter systems and at least one exhaust system is that these things work, period. You may not have a real great dyno printout, but when you can beat some of the quicker F Bodies and scads of other "car" competitors with your flying brick, you know you did the right thing.
Boy am I wordy tonight!

Bill
