Cool RPM@indicated 140 MPH

This morning about 5 am I had the Big Nasty on the bayway across Mobile Bay. No traffic and a yearning to see what could be. Anyway at 140 MPH the tach indicated 4200 rpm and slowly was walking up and I do mean slowly.
Just wondering what this baby could do with more room to stretch it's legs. Someone needs to run one of these gems at the Nevada Silver State classic. I noticed on the bassani dyno test sheets that max stock HP was @ +- 4200 rpm. Will they pull redline in overdrive? Any thoughts on this. I do have the soft tonneau for aero improvement.

Just have to believe a 160 speedo should be available. Grin.Stable as any car I have had at this speed. It was cooler say about 50 degrees and fairly calm. only about 20 feet above sea level. So I had a good stack of about 15#s of absolute pressure.

My brother-in-law is a local police officer and wants me to run my truck one night when he is working. I said he was crazy. I would be posting pictures of what a deer does to a truck at 140+. Scott

Seems I remember Wyldman posting a 155MPH run. Curious what his RPMs were.

Thndr,

I'm sorry, I really didn't have time to look at the tach, I was too busy holding on to Beastie. The way she winds up from about 135, I would guestimate around 4700-4900 rpm.

BTW that run was made in OD, that may account for the high top speed and the wind out required to reach it.

I think 150-155 MPH is getting near the max. Not that these trucks are underpowered *grin*... but they are trucks. They're aerodynamics will simply end up holding you back. Don't get me wrong, this is probably the best "sport-truck" ever built, but they are all still trucks. Do any of you notice any high-speed lifting with your trucks? My 1995 F-150 becomes VERY light around 125 or so.

Beastie was getting a little floaty around 145, it wasn't too bad up to the 155 mark. I got a little buffeting and opted to shut it down. It was not so unstable that I could not handle it, but I finally let discretion rule over stupidity.

Aerodynamics (what aerodynamics?) will make the truck feel like you are driving a brick wall at that kind of speed. The faster you go, the bigger the wall.

I would not recommend anyone try this at home. I had some controllable conditions and a friend to watch my back. I proved it can be done, and that should be enough (I hope). The only way I'll ever do that again is if get the chance to run on a tri-oval track. Maybe...

at 148 my ground effects started to peel away from truck. since i have a car that is governed to 150mph, i have something to compare the ride to at that speed, it's scary and i will not do it again in the "L".

Unhappy

Whenever I try it at home the wife always yells at me from the kitchen to slow down whenever I get up over 100(kid might wander out in the hallway I guess).

I guess it depends on road conditions and wind as well, but I found the L to be very stable at 140. There is a race here in Texas in April someplace around big bend. I was planning on running it in the 130 class but now I'm thinking maybe I should go for the unlimited class so as to really wring all the possible speed out of the beast. But then I'd have to get a rollcage so mebbe not. Has anyone run this thing before?

Thumbs up

Morning all:

Just sitting here drinking my last cup of coffee before work and noticed this thread.

Simply amazing to me that we are all very calmly discussing driving a Ford Pick up truck at 140 to 160 mph. A pickup truck for crying out loud!!!! I think this is a real testament to SVT or SVO or whomever sold this concept to FMC's Board of Directors and then actually proceeded to build such a vehicle that can do 140 right off the floor so to say.

I'm of an age that I can remember when Ferraris, Jaguars and Mercedes could hardly attain those speeds, and that was not that long ago.

Personally, I doubt if I will try for the ultimate, 120 was my chicken speed and that was more to not get a cite. I sure do enjoy the posts of you braver ones, though, knowing if I kept my foot in it long enough I too could break 150 with my mods anyway.
Bill
