Question 5.4 DOHC in Lightning

what if ford put the 5.4 DOHC engine from the navigator that puts out 300hp stock rather than the 5.4 SOHC that currently powers the truck? would it make that big of a difference? why or why not?

Dunno what's coming down the road, but the twincam 5.4 wasn't far enough along in development to make the first edition of the 2nd generation. If you think back, the 5.4 DOHC engine wasn't released until about this time last year (which would make it about 90 days pre job1 of the 99.5; nowhere near enough time to see if it would hold up for 100k miles under 8lbs boost).

Fact is, the earliest 2nd generation mule I'm aware of had a blown 4.6 because even the original 5.4 wasn't far enough through durability to put a blower on it yet.

This is one of the big differences between the OEM's doing something and the aftermarket doing it. The aftermarket will put it together and drive it around for awhile (maybe) before putting it on the market. The OEM's will put it together and then run it 100k miles (plus hot/cold cycle testing). All this costs greenbacks and takes time...

Would I like to see the 5.4 DOHC? Who wouldn't? Actually 10psi through a V-10 would be kinda rad, don't you think? :-)

Guys,

You both make good points, but one of the discussions on this earlier also included a real good point, ie, that he DOHC motor is taller than the SOHC motor (the heads in particular) and would have required modifying the hood for clearance. The intake would also have had to change, again because of the head geometry.

The Lightning was developed from off-the-shelf parts for cost considerations, trying to make it accessible to a broader range of folks. If I had to pay even a couple of grand more, it would have seriously impacted my decision to buy. I would have regretted it forever, but would have to live w/it.
