Unhappy Cloud of smoke???

Hey all,
I have had a few minor problems since pciking up my truck in Oct ,clunk on hard wheel turn(fixed via chasis lube),passenger side window noise while going down(also fixed via lube job),but tonight I noticed what could be a more troubling problem...Smoke on a hard acceleration.
I had a late 80's Z28 challenge me on the way home from work and I obliged.I smoked him in more ways than one though. I noticed,as watched him in the rear view,a cloud of blueish/whitish smoke puff out my pipes and detected a slight smell of smoke in the air(not tires either).I am a bit concerned to say the least.I am not even close to being the truck/car guys/gals(can't foget Christy) that you all are so I am pleading w/ you for help.

I had a 91 Syclone and now have a 99 lightning and have notice this on both. I notice it only at night with car headlights behind me. It is probably the high volume of air and heat exiting making steam from the pipes. Scott

Scott,
God I hope that's all it is,I have been checking previous posts and I have seen mentions of bad motors ect and I am slightly unnerved by this.I too own a Sy and I haven't had this "puff" occur,I may have to pay attention to it when it's hybernation period is over .
Thanx for the comforting words of wisdom,

Just a thought...
Check your intercooler reservoir level. The coolant could be getting into the engine which, will cause white smoke when burned off (Such as a blown head gasket or head). There have been problems with the intercoolers which some of us (ME) have had, and it's being looked into...

HITMAN31 I had the exact same problem and on Monday Jan.17, a new engine is being installed. It came to the dealer today.
I discovered oil in my aircleaner duct which is caused by excessive crankcase pressure. The fumes build up in the duct and when you go full boost, it sucks oil into the engine.T ake your airbox top off and look in the duct. I bet you will see oil in it.

I have same thing. I noticed when I ran a mustang , covered him with smoke . So I had a friend ride with me, and a friend try to keep up in chev truck. When you accel , it is blackish smoke (fuel). Computer is going full rich at WOT . Both friends could see very well(head hanging out window, friend in truck had his windows down) . All 3 of us are auto master techs. The smell is from cat-converters getting hot from run(so much fuel). Will smell realy bad after running up to 120+ ,then coming to stop or slow down.

Thanx for all the responses guys, the L was put into hybernation 2 days ago(snow in the forecast for the next 5 days so it was time) but Saturday is supposed to be sunny and cold so I'll pull her out for one last spin and make sure I check all you have suggested.I really hope it's not the engine!

William:

Are you saying that the smoke is normal because of the rich mixture, etc., at WOT?

If so, why don't all Lightnings experience the same phenomenum? I spend a good part of my driving life at WOT, and have yet to see a puff of smoke.

I have the same thing, just runs rich under wot. PLEASE NOTE- While this is nothing to worry about, it does dilute your oil over time with the excess gasoline. Frequent oil changes would be wise if you push it often. Even if you run expensive sythetic oil, change it. If the smoke really is blue or white, that is a different story. If your not sure do like William, have someone ride behind and smell it.

Rolled her out for one more spin before wniter finally arrives to check on the possiblities that everyone suggested.
Good news...I think. No oil in the airbox, not a drop, the airbox is as clean as the day I picked it up at the dealership.Intercooler reservoir level is fine.So I took her out for the big test, found a Chevy Extreme at a light,I know.I know, not a real test but he served the purpose. He gave me a thumbs down when I gave him the nod,but he stomped on it(ha ha ha),I gave him 3 cars before I even hit my gas pedal. I payed close attention to the exhaust and nada.Nothing.Zip.No smoke . I was pumped to say the least.Oh yeah,I crushed the kid in the "not-so-extreme",had to have been by 12 cars by the time I hit 105.
Just to be sure I ran a Mustang(v6,no real test yet again) and finished off w/ a new Celica(say it w/ me,"No test" ). They were all being driven by punk kids and all deserved getting the smack layed down on them. No sign of smoke so I'm leaning toward Scottdog's hypothesis, but I will keep an eye on it.
Thanx again for all the help, sorry about the length,
Brett

Hitman - the night you first noticed the problem, was it really cold? When the themometer drops, a lot more steam will come out of the exhaust.
