Carbon Deposits(?)
My Lightning has a clatter around 3250RPM's when cold that sounds something like collapsed lifters sound in a more primitive style engine. The sound pretty much goes away when it reachs normal operating temp. The Ford dealer mechanic said it is carbon on the pistons hitting the heads that softens when the engine heats up. Anyone else have this problem? He suggests running a tank of regular gas through it occasionaly but I doubt I'll do that because the manual(and Superchips) say premium only. Any other thoughts or suggestions from the worlds best online board mechanics?

Hey 4D, Sal here. I'd find another mechanic. Carbon deposits that thick on a year old truck? I don't think so. The noise is piston slap. It is caused by poor wrist pin location in some cyilnders. Combined with forged pistons that expand a bit aftert hey heat up, the noise is caused by the piston "****ing" twice in the bottom of the bore on every downstroke. Ford will replace the motor with a line motor (complete from pan to blower). The new motor has revised pistons that eliminate this problem. I put a motor in mine at 2200 miles I spent a good amount of time working with the engineers to figure this out. It's been a common problem in all Triton truck motors since 97. My new motor doesn't make the noise, although I have noticed that it does puff some smoke on startup :-/

Ok, I assume there is some kind of automatic censoring on this board? In my above post, a word had part of it blocked out when I posted it. The word was c*o*c*k*i*n*g. (let's see if that works)

Sal,
It's great to have you back on board. I for one missed your concise and informative insight.

I dont think that there are any increased deposits from lower octane gas. I think what the mechanic was getting at (However wrong it may be on a forced induction motor) is that the lower octane fuel burns easier and hotter. I guess that he figures the additional heat will clean the deposits.
Triple post even. Man when this thing gets locked up it goes wild.

Please, no-one hit on me, but try your chip in the normal mode. I run both the PSP chip and the Superchip and have the same noise at the same rpm. In my case, it is the crappy winter gas we have in metro Atlanta as far as I can tell.
If that doesn't change things, then Sal may be right about the ****ing rods.
As to the carbon buildup, I would say that is absolute rot and the tech was fishing.

Yep, we are well and truly censored right from the get go.
Let's see if it works in other languages?
Merde, skit, hijo de puta, kram, cojones and etc.
Please, this is a joke, and is a mix of Spanish and Swedish equivelants to some common words I have seen on the board.
Steve has had a bad hair week, maybe we can give him a laugh.

It's been doing it since around 2,000 miles(8,000 now) except when it's at the dealer
. This is the forth time I've had it in and he barely heard it this time. I lean toward the piston slap diagnoses more except pulling the battery and forcing a relearn quiets it down for awhile. It would be unusal for one of my vehicles to have carbon build up anyway
, but it's not something I would argue with a Ford mechanic about. I'm gettin' real frustrated about it anyway. I always thought piston slap could be heard at startup for 10-15 secs? There is no noise at startup or if you just rev it...never. The only way it will do it is in gear at 3200 or so cold and it's very sensitive to throttle position. A little more it quiets, a little less and it goes away. I would probably never even know about it except leaving work one morning when the RPM's peaked at around 3k it kinda hung there for a couple seconds before shifting and it made about 3 clatters and I thought to myself *censor* (beat your software to it Steve
) and I pulled it back down in second to hear it clatter its little heart out. So I'm still at square one. This guy was the largest dealer in southeast VA's(maybe all of VA) best 5.4 mechanic but he made the diagnosis before hearing it going on only what I told him. BTW, he has already changed one Lightning engine for PS but that one was noisy on startup.
