i really want a lightning

my dad had a 2001 L with 4# lower, bassani exhaust, diablo chip, and a set of headers (not sure what kind) and i loved it! he sold it a year ago and have been stuck with my truck. ive been looking on autotrader and i found a couple L's for sale in my area, but the ones closer to my price range are 99's & 00's with some mileage on them. would there be any reason to avoid these? i know they have a little less power, 3.55s, etc. but i know you can still make power with them. pretty much what im trying to ask is should i save my money for a 2001+ or go ahead and get what i can and catch the mod bug?

What do people do on average with a performance vehicle? Beat on them! Save up some more money and find a newer one with less miles and mabye no mods = possibility of someone who wasn't beating it. My first L was a 2000 with 60,000 miles. It was a dog and had alot of problems....Took it back to the dealer and got my trade in back (had the truck over the weekend). I waited another year BUT... I wound up with a 03 with 1,175 miles on it bone stock for except a air filter.

I was in the same boat that you're in now... Wanted an L really bad and searched auto traders ebay etc almost daily looking for one... the newer ones where a little out of my price range at the time and the older ones with alot of miles on them where in the price range and very tempting. Wait and get a newer one...

That's a good start I think. When you get a Lightning you'll appreciate it that much more.

That's basicly what I did. I Magnacharged my '98 4.6 back in '02. It was a blast! I've wanted a Lighting for a while now and this year I decided that I'd go for broke and get one. I liked that '98 but the Lightning is a much more refined powerful pick-up.

If you decide to Procharge your current truck it'll be hard to save money. As you probably already know the mod bug is very hard to escape. You might start with the Procharger but you'll soon convince yourself that you need the 42lb injectors, 90mm MAF, high flow fuel pump, shift kit, 4:10 rears, max tuning, ect, ect. It's not always the cheaper alternative. I guess you could just do like I did and go further into debt and have a Lightning. He!!, I'm young (sort of), I'll be working for many more years. I deserve to have a Lightning.

What ever you do, have fun!

haha, thanks!

my dad had the truck for 2 years. had about 25k miles on it when he sold it. i probably put about 10k by myself so i know how to drive it.

i would seriously love to mod my truck. ive had so many different ideas. but is the 4.6 really worth modding? especially with 155k miles on the clock. and yes if i did i would seriously catch the mod bug. ive been thinking about finding an svt focus with low miles. less money on gas and easier to dart around in traffic/parking lots. but i dunno yet, i have to get the money first and see what ill do. if anyone else has comments/snude remarks go ahead and lemme know whats up. thanks!

NO

"ive been thinking about finding an svt focus with low miles."[/QUOTE]

NO

IMO 4.6 will be a money pit and the svt focus sucks

Save $ for the L, you said you've driven one with a 4lb on it so I think you know whats up.

Sorry if I offended any focus owners out there I just don't like cars that accelerate with thier front wheels.

Amen to that! What's the point in getting up every day and working if you can't have what you want? (within reason - I don't think a truck is too much to ask out of life). Might as well stay home and live off the system.

DynamiteCandy... If you waste money on something you truly don't want just to pass yourself over for now, it will only take you longer to get what you truly want which is odviously a newer Lightning with less mileage that you can't exactly afford or find at this exact moment in time but say a year down the road you have some more money, better credit, etc. and find a newer L with few miles exactly like I did the wait will be well worth it.

I had the bug just like you.

I made a compromise just like you're thinking of doing now and got one that I could afford at the time because I wanted one so bad and was so impatient and was highly disapointed with it to the point I had to take it back to the dealer and get my trade-in back two days later. https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=150321

A year later I wound up with exactly what I wanted, a newer un-abused Lightning with low miles and couldn't be happier.

When I got the abused and tinkered with POS 2000 with 60,000 miles I had buyers remorse right away on the trip home and even liked my 98 ext. cab 4.6 STX better and wanted it back - mabye the Lightning wasn't for me afterall? However from the first time I seen and sat in the 03 on the showroom floor GLEAMING like new with 1,175 miles on the OD, a two hour drive from home on a friday taken off work...my old truck wasn't even a thought since that point. I said to the two sales guys sitting at the desk beside the L with a huge smile on my face "I'm not even going to test drive it - I'm taking it"

Get yourself a vehicle where you have no doubts... No doubts if it's worth it, to old/too many miles, or have to ask other people if it's worth modding etc... Take it from someone who's been in your same exact shoes. You only live once, do yourself right.

your very right emig. i do love the lightning, but i also have a major thing for sport compacts, hence the svt focus. other compacts ive really been considering are a mini cooper S, WRX, and the srt-4. yes i know how superior RWD is to FWD but im looking for a daily driver and i dont plan on taking it to the track often if at all. and its not credit thats holding me back, i have great credit for a 20 yr old. bank of america raised my credit card limit from 500 to 2500, i have 5k in suzuki credit at my disposal, etc. it my lack of money cause im only working a part time job. and im also trying to move out from home soon, so there goes any thought of an L. but i think no matter what i do, i will end up with an L sooner or later thanks for your advice, i think im just going to tinker on my truck a little for now and hold off for an L later

If you like sport compacts go test drive them all and see what you like best...IMHO i think you should check out STi's too.

STi's are a bit out of my price range, i was looking in the $20k range, hence the Mini, SRT-4, and SVT Focus
