Post kill story

I was out shooting pool with some friends last night when one said there was a car in the lot that would spank the Lightning. This is the same friend that has the GN I ran not too long ago. Anyway I went to look and saw a 930 Porsche (930 is a type of 911 turbo w/ the wider body) parked next to my truck. At closing time my friend asked the owner if he wanted to run the truck. He said sure, we talked a bit and found that it wasn't a 930. It was a 911 non-turbo. He claimed it would run 170 top speed, and I told him I wouldn't stand a chance in top speed but from a dead stop it might be different. We caught a light, and when it changed I pulled too many lengths to count. We went on the highway then. From 60-100 it still was a blow out. He didn't try anymore after that. He was a very nice guy with a sweet looking ride, but I bet he now wishes he'd bought the turbo version.

Great story 98 SVT!

What made you think it was a 930? Did he do anything to make it appear to be a 930?

You mention 3.55's in your sig... What are you runnin' in your Cobra now?

If you are running a higher no., any guesses as to how much impact the swap had on mileage?

Talking

Hey 98,
Great kill, although if I had an extra 100k laying around I would have a real 930 turbo in my stable. But then again it would be hibernating in the garage in w/ the "L".
I've been bumming so far, no snow in lower Michigan and my truck is sleeping.
Have a good one
Jim

I got to drive a 930 Turbo (once) back in the early '80's. I think it was '78 model. Real nice car with good low end power, even before the turbo would spool up. I think the magazines were getting high 13's in the quarter, so it would be a pretty close run with a Lightning.

Those rear engined Porsches launch pretty hard, but the older non-turbos aren't real strong.

In answer to LD's ?'s

It had the wide body kit (about 12" wider than standard 911) with the Turbo emblem. Although the owner claimed he ordered it that way(?)

I only made that one run with the 3.55's.
Gas milage improved, since I can now use 5th gear at 60mph. Top speed dropped, still won't pull in 5th. First gear on the street feels the same, but easier to launch at the track. Second gear feels much better, but still lays down in 3rd. Considering going back to the 3.27's just to be "stock" again, or 4.30's.

Guys,

I believe the 930 Porsche is sold legally in Europe and not the US. It does not meet the US EPA emission standards. The 911 is actually a US version of the 930 that meets US emission standards.

The non-turbo is 280 hp at about 3100 lbs. You did well SVT. However, the special order 911 Turbo is about 410 hp at about 3150 lbs, 0-60 in about 4.4 seconds and will go from 0-100-0 mph in less than 14 seconds with a stick shift. The Porsche breaking system is second to none. Of course, it's about $120,000 too.

I don't think you would want to tangle with a 911 Turbo. The new Porsche Turbos are very much different from the 1980s models in performance.
