ATF question

I went to the ford dealership today to get some mercon ATF. The parts guy said that ford was switching to a new ATF blend. The bottle says Mercon 5 also meets Dexron 3 approved for H specification. Should I use this, I need to just add one quart.

Hi Dave - My Ford dealer just said they have it in bulk (55 g drum) so I went to my parts guy (CarQuest) where I have bought Mercon V before & all they had was the "new formula" dual purpose stuff which I didnt want since Im only dropping what I have in the pan & dont want to mix fluid types. Fortunately they can get a case of the "black bottle" (made in Canada by Exam or some such) Mercon V from the wharehouse @ $3.75 a quart (about the same as WallyWorld wants for the Castrol Merc V). You might want to go that route but Im not sure what youre trying to do. For Tim - VERY organized there dude!

Mobil 75W 90. I assume that's for the rear end. The tag on my diff. says 70W 140. Trying to gain a few hp with lower viscosity oil? Any potential reliability issues?
