Launch Technique
I could use some advice on how to get the ole lead sled off of the line in a hurry. I made my first trip to the strip tonite and I was really embarrassed with the results. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have turned my best times by stopping short of the line and putting my foot on the brake with about 30% pressure. Then, use the gas to advance to the line. At this point, go to 100% on the brake and bring the gas up to just UNDER 1000 RPMS. Hold it there while your opponent lines up. At the green (or 1/2 before) go 70-80% gas and let up on the brake. Then as soon as you have forward momentum go full bore and hold it there. This has netted me 13.58 and I'm sure with sal's filter I could be down around 13.3 or 13.4
Hey sixspipes,I find the best way to get rid of those embarrasing moments is go pick up some drag tires.I cant tell you what an improvement it was for this SVT. All I do now is brake-torque it to about 1400 rpm and nail that gas. Man, what a rush

Hey Spiro
What size are those Drag tires, and what made you decide those over other brands?
I know this was posted a while back, but I can't remember when or what it was!
Thanks

Hey PFA,
They are B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A, size are 255 50 R16. They are a full 3 inches shorter that stock. At the track I go threw the traps at around 5000R.P.M. So, I guess you can say once I bolt these bad boys on I`m also making a gear ratio change in the rear...which this SVT loves
As far as choice, I`ve been on the drag scene some time now with the Mustangs and starting realizing that these tires actually hook. The fastest stang out there now is "Big-Daddy"Duane Gutridge he is running consistent 9.20`s on these tires. In the Jan. 2000 issue of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords they are doing a Drag Radial Showdown. I`ve had the issue for some time, I believe it should be out on newsstands by now.Well, I could see it now, were all going to be running Drag Tires at the track....
...why not?

These are the results from the 1/8 mile track up in Sanger, Tx. I realize these numbers are pretty pathetic, but the only way I can improve is continue to work at it. I didn't bother to adjust the air pressure in the tires (38psi).
Best reaction time / .743
Best 60ft. time / 2.263 (twice)
Best 1/8th mile time / 9.440
Best terminal speed / 80.061
I guess this will be my baseline numbers. I heard guys complaining about the track being a little greasy. An early 80s vette blew his transmission immediately in front of me on one of my runs and it took about 15 minutes to clean up the mess (including the torch treatment). A vast majority of the cars were running slicks including numerous Mustangs and Camaros running low 8s and even some upper 7s. It was a pretty intimidating experience for a virgin. Maybe I should concentrate on autocross instead.
I know my truck has a lot more potential than I was able to get out of it last night. I'd like to meet up with an experienced driver that could take it through a couple of runs for me. There is an F-150 meeting scheduled in the DFW area next weekend (see events calender). I would be happy to meet with anyone that could make themselves available this Friday (12/10) night at the Sanger track.

Hey sixpipes, Spiro here. If your determined to run on the F-1`s at the track I would recommend that you raise the front tire pressure to around 45psi.Then lower the rear anywhere between 22-28psi. you should play with the air pressure til` you feel comfortable. The higher psi. in the front will improve your 60`foot times. Good luck.........wish I was in the area would love to make it next week.

Hey Sixpipes, Sal here. The only way to really launch the truck consisantly and to it's full ability, is with different tires. Every track will have a different bite, and my local track isn't that great for outstanding 60fts. The only way I could launch the truck on the F-1s, was to go off idle, roll a bit and then go WOT. The most I'd get is a little chirp or two. But since I have testing to do, and often run brackets, I needed something more consistant that would bite. You can't put a 15" rim on the back of the 99, so my fresh 29" Hoosier slicks off my 95 were usless. The only option was either Mickey Thompsons 26" tall slick for 16" rim, or a set of drag radials. I didn't know about the MT slicks at the time, so I bought a set of Nitto Extreme Drags, since I has heard they worked better than the BFGs. I really wanted a stock height tire, and I contaced every tire manufacturer I could, but 26" was the tallest I could get, so I bought the Nittos. They are 245/50-16s, mounted on ARE-767 (Nastruck looking) rims. They did take a little beating up before they worked nice, but I have been turning low 1.9x (1.91 best) 60-ft times, launching at about 1200-1500rpms with nothing more than the PSP chip, filter kit, and the Nittos. The truck is bone stock otherwise. I have worked down from 26psi to 16 psi, and found that 16-18psi works best on my truck. Hopefully as larger rims sizes become more popular, tire companies will make sticky tires for them. I hope this helps!!

Hey guys, In the Jan. 2000 Issue of Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords they compared the drag T/A`s to the Nitto. As far as one being better than the other, that`s up to personal preference.I have tried both types and for me found that the B.F.Goodrich`s hooked the best.My best 60` was a 1.84 and backed it up with a 1.87 at Cecil County. Not to mention the Goodrich`s are less expensive.Considering my mods 13.0`s are awesome. Good luck to all of us.........

I'm just curious, when I'm at the track I idle at the line then just punch it. The track hooks Ok I guess because all 60' times have been 2.06-2.02, and I only get a small amount of wheel spin for about 10 feet. I did try powerbraking at the line to the point where it just started making boost, but had no change in 60' time and resulted in one of my two 14.0x runs at only 97MPH. I think the intercooler started to get heat soaked at the line. Any opinions?

Hey 98 SVT COBRA,those are some pretty good 60` times for the F-1`s. Are you using stock air pressure? It always helps to play with air pressure. As far as heat soak I`m not too sure, Sal would probably have the answer. My best times have come from 1500 rpm Launch. But, whatever you`re doing seems to be working

I've never check the air pressure, so what ever it came with is how it is. I would love to go faster without mods. Thats why I'm curious, most others seem to go best with a different technique. But I won't complain I love the consistency.
The last time I went to the track I decided it would be the last time for the year as it was so embarrassing I didn't even want to race the little rice burners.
I'm still saving up and am going to re-do the suspension and try the Cal-Trac traction bars. Then I will go back and see what difference there is, with the stock tires.
As far as playing with tire pressure, my question is what do you guys use when you need to add more air to the tires at the track? Where can I get it?
Thanks,
Mike
