Sounds like it could be your trans cross member. It cracks around the plate that is welded to it.

I have the same problem. I noticed a VERY minor vibration in the steering wheel at the same time, and got under the truck to check it out - I found that the tie rod on the passenger side is showing signs of wear. Have you checked to see if you are having the same issue? Might be worth a look...

Do you have aftermarket anything in the front suspension?

My truck pops when backing up slowly with the wheels turned hard also. There is no sound when going over bumps. I already have the clunk washers, I also have the Roush suspension and Energy Suspension sway bar endlinks.

Any sugestions? I doubt it is worn tie rods since the truck only has 12,000 miles.

Mine pops HARD. I can see that the steering stops on the spindles are not aligning with the DJM lower control arms. I would check the trailing edges of the LCAs and see if there is any evidence of that happening.

Same symptoms as yours...I thought the same thing - mine only has 23K on it - until I checked them.

I am also going to look into the LCAs just in case.

I had the same problem with my truck when it had about 10k miles on it. Popping when backing up and also when turning hard, going over a bump. Took it to the dealer and told him what was going on and when I got it back he told me that they tightened all the suspension bolts, since then no popping at all. Good luck Kat

Mine does the same thing - it's embarassing. Clunk washers didn't do anything to stop it, either.

I have the answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had this problem ever since I had owned the L back in 01'. I put the clunk washers in. Still had a creeking/poping sound. It finally got fixed back in April of this year. Man did it drive me nuts.

My extended warrenty was due up and I went to my stealership and talked with my mechanic. He said that he put some old school axl grease on the steering sockets that connect to the spindles. He said that the grease-less ones, which they all are, will completely dry up and start making this noise. He said that thick transmission fluid would do great also. He told me to get one of those old oil squirt cans and fill it up with the tranny fluid and squirt it on the socket-joint every other time I change the oil.

This WILL solve the problem......

what about the nasty metal on metal rubbing sound when i hit a bump in the road, it is really bad when i am going slow down a bumpy road. itsond like it is coming from the driver front but then it sounds like it is right under or behind the cab
