More Lightning Crate Engine Woes
Hey Bob, Sal here. I do a lot of one off custom conversions, so maybe I can be of some help here. I am very familiar with both the engine bays of the 69-70 and fox body Stangs. I have done 460+ci conversions in both. The 69-70 engine bay is much smaller than the fox engine bay. With a 460 sitting in the 69-70 bay, there is about 1 inch of room between the valve covers and the shock towers. When I do them, I cut the top portion of the shock towers out, and weld in 1/4 inch steel plate. This gives more room for getting to the plugs, but does not make the bay wider. Our motor is about 4 inches wider than a 460. The only way I could see getting iti in there, is to do a tube front end with struts. As for the Fox, you still have several inches of room on the sides with the 460, so our 5.4 should fit, with minor modifications. I know several people have put 4.6s into the Foxes, but that doesn't really help and the 5.4 is wider. Hope this helps at all.

I picked up my new engine at the Consolidated Freightways terminal last night. It's a big beautiful beast. Actually, it's too big. The width of the engine comes in at about 28 and a half inchs. The problem is I only have about 26 inches of room between the shock towers of the 70 Mustang I planned to put it in. Options open are to either find another vehicle to drop it in, or modification of the shock towers ala Boss 429. Does anyone have any information on the Boss 429 shock tower modifications done by Kar Kraft on the 69 and 70's? Boss 429 engine dimensions(width in particular)? I'd really like to use this car if possible, but may have to resign to putting it back together with another Cleveland and buying something like a late model GT to use the new engine in. I also have an 88 GT I could use which looks like it has a wide enough engine bay. Has anyone installed a modular engine in a 87-93 Fox chassis? I appreciate any help given.

Thanks for the info.
As a side note: Ford Motorsport lists the
following engine width dimensions in their
99 catalog.
4.6 L SOHC 28-5/8"
4.6 L DOHC 30"
460 26"
351W 21"
302 18-3/4
No 5.4 L was listed but it seem to measure the same as the 4.6 L.
If someone actually fit one of those DOHC engines in a 87-93 Fox Mustang,
it should be no problem fitting the 5.4 L in my 88 GT.
Sal, I do plan to inquire at several local street rod shops on the feasability of doing a different type of front suspension on the 70 before settling on a newer body style.
Thanks again for your input.
