Firebird Aftermath
What fun! I met JoeLightning at Firebird Friday night, not planning on running, just watching, and was coerced into making at lease one run, so... with 34 lbs. of air in the tires, no burnout, a full load, all options and my gear (water, Christmas gifts etc.)I pulled up to the line, gave it a few hundred extra RPM over idle and floored it. Managed a 14.03 and left a turbo rice-burner behind. Sorry Yoda couldn't make it, those check engine lights usually reset after five or six restarts on BMWs if it is a temporary sensor trigger. Life in the OBD II world.
Hey Zonaman. It was an absolute pleasure meeting you last night. I had such a good time I forgot about my wife. I told her when I left for Firebird that I would check in around 9:00pm. I guess we were having such a good talk because when you left I knew it was 9:00pm, but I was only thinking back on our conversations. She paged me at 10:00pm and boy was I in trouble. I made it up too her today though. Sorry for the coercion, but it did look like you had fun.
Had my best outing yet. The weather was about 55degF, 20% humidity. My best ET was a 13.710 @ 101.64mph with a miserable 2.139 60'. I'm running the stock F1's with 26psi in the rears and 45psi in the fronts. My best MPH was a 14.186 @ 102.86mph pass with a horrible 2.541 60'. The track was very slippery as Friday was quite windy and there was dust everywhere. On top of all that, I wish those stock tired idiots would just stay out of the water box. It seamed that every time it was my turn it was just after some redneck dribbled all over the starting line. The point is I'm just having fun.
Looking forward to visiting with you in future.

I had similar experiences with the water box last night using the stock tires. What were your 1/8 mile times?

Sixpipes,
Because these aren’t the best times/mph I've seen I didn’t want to bore those ¼ mile gods out there. But since you asked here’s all the data for my 4 passes in order. I have always found that either my first or second run to be the fastest, while possible later runs to be the quickest. My second run was done 8 minutes after the first. My theory (no actual hard data on this cold night, just conclusions based on temperature data I took of the intercooler water when the ambient was 95+F this summer) is that when I can make back to back runs the intercooler water has a chance to stay cool as I pretty much just coast back into line from the end of the 100+ mph run. There is a long run-off area that u-turns back to the staging lanes and you can reject all of heat you just added to the water. If you have to then wait in the staging lanes the engine heat soaks the intercooler water and there is no fan to facilitate rejecting that heat. My future plan is to incorporate small fan(s) and a switch to manually control both the fan and the intercooler water pump so that at least the temp would be ambient before every run. Then I would just need to work on my launches.
Here’s the data: (sorry for the bunched up numbers but I tried to fix them 3 different ways)
Run #1 2 3 4
60’ 2.300 2.541 2.139 2.302
330’ 6.160 6.317 5.866 6.234
1/8 9.237 9.348 8.884 9.340
mph 80.52 81.80 81.98 79.99
1000 11.886 11.961 11.488 12.003
1/4 14.134 14.186 13.710 14.266
mph 101.98 102.86 101.64 100.19
Hope this helps. Modifications include PSP’s filter kit (THANKS SAL!) and the Superchip. Race weight with me in the truck was 4880lb that night. Elevation is 1100ft or 1200ft. Temp was 55degF, 20% humidity. Barometer was right at 30.00

JoeLightning,
Thanks for the information. I think there might be something to the intercooler temperature issue. After having a chance to reflect on my runs from Friday night, the best runs were my first and second also and they were done back to back. I also believe that I was too agressive with the accelerator and was prematurely shifting into second because it seemed to bog a little when it shifted (probably from not getting a good grip in first before WOT). Without an observer and with all the additional noise and distractions at the line, it's really hard to say what went wrong.
I know it is kind of humbling to post average or even below average numbers when everyone else is posting "best times", but I suspect they understand that these trucks are hard to hook up especially with the F-1s and less than ideal conditions. Thanks again.

I can attest to Joelightning running better 60' times when we meet last time @ PIR. They were all in the 2.01 range. Wonder if the track being cooler has anything to do with it?? Still a great run with that 13.7 there. Hope after I get Sals chip I will be hitting that (not to worried about that).
