Post No more LS-1 's to kick around

it's seems gm announced this am, the demise of the f-body. no one is buying them, 1/2 of their projected sales, so they are calling it quits, no 2001 model for camero or firebird or any varitions.

Hey BBQ:
You beat me to it. I was going to start a thread entitled "Instant Collectibles", go out and buy a heavily discounted Camaro or Firebird.
Frankly, and I know many on this board and the Mustang boards will disagree, but I hate to see it happen.
Competition is the life blood of any industry, whether it be cars or potato chips (Notice I spelled potato correctly, No Gore here) and presently Daimler/Chrysler has no similar product. This could not be a real good omen for FMC to feel the pressure to continue to expand the envelope for the Mustang, or even fix what obviously has gone wrong with the Cobra variant.
As a for what it's worth, I lived in Peru for several years in the '70s during a period of time when there were "monopolies" given out by the Govt. as regards cars and trucks. One manufacturer for cars up to 1 litre, one for 1.0 to 2.5 litres and so on and one for trucks less than one ton, one for 1 ton up to 3 tons and so on.
Believe me when I say that the standard of quality was less than acceptable. Different methodology, of course, but the result could be the same.
Given my age, I have owned and enjoyed, even loved a lot of GM products, and I really wish they would get their act together and produce cars they are certainly capable of and learn how to properly market them.
I think we'd all be better off.
End of soapbox.
Bill

FYI... it was Dan Quayle who misspelled potato as potatoe.

Nathan:
Many, many points for you!
Of course, I am a Republican, and they can do no wrong, other than drugs, memory lapse, tape destruction and the like.
For what it's worth, I know who the President of Peru is. Chuck/Chuck.
Now, was it you that tried to order one of those R/C Lightnings from me or not? I am losing sleep over this!

I too am a Republican, but couldnt let that one slip. The current president of Peru is Alberto Keinya Fujimori, preceeded by Alan Garcia Perez, right?

I have an R/C Lightning on order, but its coming as the package from Tower Hobbies. (and is overdue, i might add.)

Dear Bill,

Very well said indeed! If it were not for the LS1 F-bodies, we wouldn't have a 260 hp Mustang GT for 1999, I firmly believe, just for one quick example. I don't know of any market that is not better served by free competition, which lets the quality of the product determine it's relative suceess or failure.

I have not seen this announcement from GM, or whether they have said anything about any other performance vehicles that those sales are hopefully going to be shifted over to, perhaps. But I too, agree that this is a loss for all of us. Think about it for just a second......can any of us imagine there not being a Mustang? It's almost unthinkable, the car that gave birth to so much. Let us hope that Ford never sees fit to abandon *their* legend, for lack of sales, but instead is always able to keep it alive via product innovation and undeniable appeal.

Cool

Nathan/Mike:
A: Nathan, my Lightning RC will beat Tower's
Just kidding, this is like the Camaro/Lightning/Mustang stuff. Enjoy!
Mike: Right on, and in the same thought process I have. At one point in time, my neighbors drove Studebakers, Hudsons and Packards and they were all competitive cars. Sorry to see them long gone.
Nathan: 100 points for Fujimori, another 100 for Perez. I am really, truly impressed.
Kind of fun with the trivia stuff, got to lighten up once in a while.

I also agree with you Bill, But I would bet that the Camaro and F-Bird/TA will be back within a few years. It will be something like the T-Bird/Cougar leaving for a while and coming back and being a much better car (not that they were bad!).

Just my thoughts...

Cool

Ya beat me to it PFA. Of course the worst thing that could happen to the Mustang would be to put it in the hands of bean counters.*Shiver* Look what happen to the Cobra when it was taken from SVE and given to Team Mustang this year.

Well, I guess 2002 might be the last year for the F-bodies. Have you heard about the next Mustang? Built on the expensive chassis of the the Lincoln LS/Jaguar S type/New T-Bird. There was an article in this months Automobile Magazine and a cool drawing about the next Stang. I figure the F-body cars will go away and then come back as much more expensive cars to compete with the much more expensive Mustang. Or maybe one will be FWD to go up against the Cougar.

The report late Thursday (Nov 11) about canceling the F-body was quickly denied by GM spokespeople Friday. They said the cars are still safe and alive until 2002.

I know alot of people don't like the F-Bodies, but like Mike said, if it was not for the Z28/Trans Am, the Mustang GT would not be the car it is today. And if the F-Bodies die, what incentive will Ford have to add more power and make the Mustang a better perfomer.

Wink

this am, i heard an ad for the "Z-28". i guess all the talk has them thinking of actually trying to sell these things. they claimed Mercedes and Porsche drivers won't see the all aluminum 305hp LS-1 in their rear view mirrors, and the Z-28 costs less too!!. guess i'll put the "for sale" sign on my GS400 quickly b4 word gets out to have a "cheaper" car pass me would be the ultimate humiliation.
