'99 lightning 4.10 gear
Can anyone tell me for certain that a 4.10 Expedition gear will fit the 9.75 rear of the '99 lightning? I noticed in the motorsports catalog that there is a different pinion nut required, can anyone tell me why? Any input will be appreciated.
Yes, The Lightnings have the same rear ends as the 2wd Expeditions. I bought a gear from Rider Racing in Taylor Mi. It was a Precision Gear and had to change the pinion nut. It was the same size as a 89 4wd F-250 pinion nut. Rider failed to mention this and the stock one will start on the threads and feel O.K. but won't run all the way down. The guy who helped me set it up is a mechanic at the dealership and said the kit from Ford Motorsports is easier to install and more complete then Presision's. We put the exact ammount of shim back behind the pinion bearing and it was perfect. He's done alot of gear swaps in newer trucks and said 90% of the time a 3.55 to 4.10 swap the pinion depth will use the same shims.

Dear HIGH RISK,
That is one very nicely configured Lightning you have there, from looking at your signature line, that thing must fly!

HI,ALL I was looking at US GEAR and they make the 4:10, 4:56's also. The pinion nut for the LIGHTNING is metric. The listings from US GEAR show for 1996 up 9.75 diff's,so it's more than likely has the standard thread pinion? Also SAL or MIKE might know this question, It looks to me that the speed sensor is off the rear diff. If that's the case do you still have reprogam the speedo for a gear change? I have not done a gear swap with a speed sensor diff. But if you do not change the tire height, won't the sensor ring stay constant.

HI!... JIGAWATT : Been there done that! I have installed 4.10 gears in my "99" and as of this time and date FORDS does not and I repeat "NOT" know hoe to recalibrate the speedo in a "99" F-150 with the 5.4 engine. I have been working with my dealership for 2 months now and still have not been able to get my speedo recalibrated. We have talked to the FORD techs and the SVT techs and they both don't have a fix yet. I have tried just about everything that I can think off and still nothing has worked. But don't worry guys MIKE T and I are working on a possible solution and if it works out we'll let you know.

HEY,NEAL I see you have a sport.Does it have the 4R100 trans. If it has the 4R70W the speed sensor is in the trans.,and the sensor in the diff.is for the A.B.S.The reason I ask this question is to try and not have the same little problem, when I put in my 4:10s. thanks Kevin

Just a quick bit of info. If you have a Superchip and you make a gear change (3.73 or 4.10) you can have your superchip reprogramed to have your odometer/ speedometer read correctly.

HI!... JIGAWATT : My truck has it's v.s.s on the top of the rear end housing not in the tranny. I do have the 4R70-W tranny but I have got the STERLING 9.75 rear end in my truck not the 8.8. So the set up is a little different. I also have a digital odometer.

Talked to Patrick at Superchips (he is one of the techs/engineers there)again today and he assured me that the Speedo/odo fix was in. I did not get a chance to test the speedo after I knocked out the chip while making a hard pass.Have a plan to use a ribbon connector with the Superchip which will put an end to the chip falling out and using duct tape on the EEC. This will also make it very easy to remove the chip since I no longer have a stock program in either program 1 or 2.

OK Guys, just so we're all clear on what Superchips really can and cannot do with regards to making corrections for gear changes in these vehicles.....
I just spoke with Steve Madole, who is the Chief Engineer of Superchips, to let him know we needed a clear answer on this for publication. First, for the 1999.5 Lightning, they *can* make a correction for up to 3.99 gearing, but not all the way up to 4:10, so it's still going to be a little bit off. And, this is of course a custom program, so there is an additional charge for this. Currently, this charge is $100, but the custom programming fee is going to be increased to $125 very shortly. (This is their standard flat fee for custom programming in most applications)
With regards to *other* Ford vehicles, they have a few other vehicles done, with the same limitation, 3.99. It will depend on whether or not they have your particular computer code already done, so anyone who is interested in having their speedo corrected in other vehicles should check to see if it is available for their code. (It's available for all 1999.5 Lightnings, as they are all CUX1 codes) Anyone who wants to have this done for their Lightning or other Ford vehicle can contact us, and we can give you a discount on this fee.
So the information that BABolt was kind enough to provide to everyone from Patrick @ Superchips is basically correct, and I just wanted to expand on that a bit to let everyone know just exactly what can be done, and to what degree. It is not available for very many vehicles yet, a few Mustang codes, and a few others so far, so it's not something that is widely available for all Ford vehicles, but will become more widely available over time, as usual with new product developments, as they work on more codes.
