Question Can I use gasoline to clean the intercooler?

To all who have been been cleaning their intercooler Most threads suggest brake or carb cleaner but warn against it stripping the rotors.

1. Why not use gasoline as this has always been very effective for removing oil.
2. What's the pros and cons of stripped rotors?

Much appreciated,
Jesper

I'm sure the gas will work but for 3.50 + a gallon, you can get 2 or 3 cans of brake cleaner.

Seems like the thing to do these days is actually strip the rotors, some even polish them up afterwards. Either way many people run rotors that have no coating left on them, and hundreds (if not more) dont even know it.
Seems to be no lose of power, and no problems associated with it.
I'm sure there's a good reason they need to be coated, but plenty run them without, so if your saying yours are coat-less, no biggy....

You should never use gasoline as a "solvent." It easily defats the skin when being used, the fumes are dangerous - and it's especially volitile when being handled in a "casual" manner, as in cleaning parts. Dont worry about the cost -be concerned about your well being and those around you.

Castrol Superclean works better than anything I have ever seen.

ever seen a nitrous backfire and the damage it does? well the same COULD happen to you. using gasoline and having the fumes hang around in a closed system all it takes is a little heat and bang. I sure as hell wouldn't do it.

It's out !!

Good advice but I wouldn't have filled the tub with gasoline and submerged the intercooler, just enough in a cup to use a brush.... Anyway I'll give the Castrol Supercleaner a chance but most likely I'll clean the outside of the intercooler housing with gasoline and a brush.

Just got the intercooler out (after dropping my swivel down behind the engine where I couldn't reach it ), and will post some pictures tomorrow of the oil mess. It's unbeliaveble but I guess that's what comes from running a 8lb pulley without a PCV system or oil separator.

BTW. All threads regarding removing the intecooler casually mentions to remove the supercharger belt, but no one eludes to the fact that it's pain in the a$$ to depress the belt tensioner. I'm 6'3" and had to get a step ladder to step into the engine bay and stand on the d@mn thing before I could twist the belt off the pulleys.....

if you had to stand on a ladder you were doing something wrong, its not that hard to get the belt off

Did you use a breaker bar, inserted into the half-inch square, or do it by hand..........LOL

Nope, obviously not I used 200 lbs of brute down force. Anyone have a picture of the breaker bar inserted into the half-inch square?

Forget about it, I just took a second look and found the half-inch square Not much room with a stock fan but I got the ratchet in and it works great. Thx for pointing out the obvious, I guess the first place you go blind is the eyes

A quick update

Thought I'd just give a quick update. Gasoline just didn't do the job. Carb cleaner was 10 times as effective. Reused the bolts and gaskets and now have a PCV kit and a crank case breather installed with check valve.

Yikes:

Blower intake:

After a couple bottles carb cleaner:

Crank case breather with check valve (look familiar Rob_02 ?):

LITTLE EASIER THIS WAY, HUH?

Glad you got everything apart. Now your up to your elbows doing the dirty stuff. Yours might seem nasty, but I've seen many worse.
Iam not completely swayed to go the oil separator route. Alot of peeps run them, and love them. But I have yet to see, a truck at the track, run fast times with one. Until then, I'll just run the system the way Uncle Ford designed it
