Hi Revs on cold startup.is this Normal?
Hmmm......I am glad at least that I am not the only one. Perhaps it has something to do with the blower, or it needs to spin at a certain speed to start up....I am just guessing here though....

This is pretty normal behavior and I saw it on my last truck as well. I have found that if you put it in neutral and tap the gas (bringing it up to 2500-3000), when you let off the gas it will often drop immediately down to normal idle. I suspect this behavior is an attempt to get the lubricant circulating within the engine as soon as possible on cold days.
Have you looked at the Drivetrain/Engines/FYI: 5.4L F150 Owners...' thread?https://www.f150online.com/f150board/Forum10/HTML/000676.html
Could you be having a problem with the routing of the wiring harness past the A/C accumulator tank?

I have gone through two phases of this, am now in the flash to 2K and am going to try the wiring harness/ac thingie tomorrow.
At normal times, the rpms go up to around 1200 immediately then slowly come down to normal.
I have read elsewhere that this has to do with the "cold startup" phase of our current emissions testing procedure. Something to do with less crap coming out of the tailpipe at a higher speed on startup than if the engine immediately achieved normal idle speed, which they used to do 2-3 years ago. Doesn't make sense to me, and I may be wrong, but I have read it on several make threads.

Is a normal part of start up for computer, as rule of tumb if going above 2300 or staying to high is problem , when engine is cold Engine controler will bring down slower to keep from stlling out. Just wait till some miles are on trucks , when carbon starts to build up in throtle body and connot reach 1500-2000 at start up . Will have to clean throtle plates.
Hey guys, Sal here. This is a normal characteristic of the 99 Lightning. I do agree that it is quite annoying, and I have asked Mike (Wesley) about giving me control over that in the software, but he said it's difficult to extract that from the software, and not really worth the trouble. I do cringe everytime I start my truck cold though

Hi F-riends,
I notice that when I start up my Lightning in the morning, the revs will immediately climb to almost 2000 and then come down. Is this normal? It seems a bit high....
Can anyone else verify that their truck does this on a cold start in the morning?
I want to avoid taking the trip to the dealer....!
Thx a bunch!

My 97 GT does the exact same thing, which leads me to believe it is something to do with Fords OBD-II start up programing. Just an observation
