How should I get this thing off ??
How should I get this thing off ??
O.k. guys, I'm looking to up my pulley. When I bought my truck it already had an original JDM Caged Solid 1 Piece 2# Pulley on it. In my pulley searches I read that alot of people have had problems getting these style pulleys off. Now this pulley has been on my L I'd say at least 15k miles, if not more. Noone really stated how they finally got them off, but I'm worried about breaking something. Whats the best way for me to get this thing off without any damage to the truck ?? Thanks....
Do yourself a big favor and don't even try to use the nut to get it off. You're going to waste your time, strip the nut and ruin the spindle anyway. So I suggest you cut to the chase and:
1) Get a piece a steel fence pipe and cut off about a 3 1/2 ft. section.
2) With the front end jacked up as high as you can (with front tires removed), put a large pipe wrench on the spindle (not the nut) and position it at about 5 o'clock. You probably will, but make sure you have someone helping you. Makes it alot easier.
3) Have the other person slide the pipe over the pipewrench while you position yourself so that you can push it from the driver's side with BOTH of your legs. I laid on my side and had my torso wedged against my garage wall.
4) Push as m-fing hard as you can and it should break loose. Don't forget to loosen the cage too.
5) Be prepared to think someone discharged a shotgun when it breaks loose. You'll more than likely think either you or your assistant was hit because the pipe and pipewrench are going to go flying.
EDIT -
Here's what it's going to look like no matter what you do:

Hope this helps.

Get the tools out, get under there and just try it. Some have had problems, and some have not. Best of luck to you....

Get the torch in behind the pulley to heat the adapter. Apply just a little heat, Be quick so you don't let the heat soak into the spindle.
Use a good closed end wrench and pipe on the small hex not a socket wrench. This will keep you from applying any side load which will make the socket slip off and twist the hex.
