light throttle, what speed does it shift into OD?

I did a search and couldn't find the answer I'm looking for. I'm also new to the L, have had it for five days and put only a couple hundred miles on it. It's a low mileage (less than 9k) '04.

I've been taking it easy so far. This thing will hang in 3rd untill I hit 45mph with light throttle. Shouldn't it be shifting sooner? At what speed does yours shift into OD, with light throttle?

Thanks.

Thats normal. If you get a chip/tune it can be adjusted I believe. Welcome aboard!

My 01L (which I bought new in July of 01) used to shift into OD at light throttle at about 30mph. 45 doens't seem right seems awfully high for a stocker. There used to be a number for SVT vehicles where someone could tell you for sure.

Mine shift's into OD at light throttle at about 47-48 mph - but I had it set up that way in the chip.

Thanks!

I was thinking about a tuner. The thing is, there are a couple mods on this truck now. There is a lower pulley, aftermarket exhaust and a boost/vac gauge. There isn't a tuning modual in the PCM but I can't tell for sure if the previous owner may have used a tuner and left the performance tune in there. If they did then I will have to have the PCM flashed with a stock program. I guess there could also me something done to the transmission. My previous F150 had the M5OD so I can't use that as a comparison. I drive an E250 for work but I believe they used the 4R70W in that. That's why I'm curious how your trucks shift.

My stock '03 will shift into OD and lock up the torque converter at about 40 MPH with a warm engine at very light throttle. If the engine is cold, it won't shift into OD until at least 45 MPH -- even higher in cold weather.

Mine wont go into OD till 55 MPH
and the Convertor doesn't lock up to 60 MPH
Along with a few other tranny shift point changes,
and the Fac Tech Total Domination Stall Convertor
It's like a frigging stick shift without the shift I tell you

CONGRATS AND WELCOME wittom
My suggestion is this
If you can somehow talk to the original owner, I WOULD
If you cant, (and you bought it from a dealer), post some pic's here
and there's a chance we know the truck or owner. (it's at least a chance)
If you have a lower Pulley, Exhaust, Boost Gauge, etc, there is a very good chance it was at one time chipped, (or as you said, re-flashed).
If it wasnt, you NEED to know what pulley you have AND GET A TUNE...

I dont want to scare you, but a Lightning with certain size pulleys, MUST have a custom tune for it, OR you are putting the motor at risk.

Can you measure the outside diameter of the pulley and let us know ?

WELCOME AND ENJOY

Thanks everyone! Thanks Rob_02Lightning, I've been reading posts by you for a few years now. I know you have a bit of experiance with the Lightning.

I'm working on getting information about the previous owner. I asked the dealership to work on that for me. I also asked that they put something in writing that this truck was modified when I bought it. Well see how hard they work at getting me the previous owner info. I guess this Ford dealership got from a wholesaler. Kind of makes me wonder why some one got rid of it.

I know that with the lower pulley a tune is necessary. That's why I'm taking it easy. I haven't had a chance to do much with the truck yet. I'm hoping to be able to spend some time doing some research this week end. I'll get some pics this week end.

At 41/42 the Torque converter locks. That's what you think is OD. Atleast as far as I was told. Mine hits 3rd at 31. Locks at 41. The torque converter locking is stronger than the 3rd gear shift, for me atleast. I need the lock up changed to about 39/40 My neighborhood speed is 35 and at 35 a Silver Buillit with high flow cats is far from quiet. I suppose they'll get used to it.
