Dyno run DHFerguson
Very impressive numbers!
Couple of questions if I may.
I noticed you made about 350 hp, my best in July in 107 degree temp was 330 with a brand new superchip We did back to back runs unchipped, installed the chip and ran again so there was no learn time. I got 303 hp unchipped.
Do you have any other mods than the chip?
What gear did you run in to get the numbers?
We ran mine in third gear with od locked out.
Your graph is hard to read on the net (so is mine) but it looks like you ran it in both the flipped and unflipped positions as it dumped at 5400 and then seemed to go off scale on the higher runs. Same as mine, and Troyer and I have delightful debates on the subject. My Tach goes off scale in the flip position in all three gears, but more interesting, it did it on the dyno tach as well same as yours.
I am just about to order up a complete Bassini exhaust system from front to back and I have Sal's intake system on order as well and will make another series of runs when that is all sorted out. Could be interesting! I believe you could get awfully close to 500 hp at the flywheel without going to Nitrous with the correct components.
I figure I have about 420 now and you are about 15 over that so we are not really that far off.
Stay in touch.

Dear Bill,
Great Post!
Wow, it sounds like you are determined to get to that 500 hp level with everything you are doing to that truck! I would love to see a nicely done cold-air intake setup, and have the air temp sensor relocated to a more reasonable location. I feel that this alone could easily give the Lightning another solid 20 hp, (perhaps more) but of course that's just pure speculation.
I have forgotten from our previous conversations Bill, and others want to know, so I thought I would ask you to expand a bit on that Bassini exhaust setup you have ordered. Can you tell us what it consists of, it is a cat-back exhaust system, does it include headers, or are headers available from them, etc? I think it would benefit many Lightning owners if you posted info on that exhaust setup, if you have the time.
And just for everyone's benefit, regardless of what your factory (or any electronic tach for that matter!) says, your new supercharged Lightning cannot turn over 5600 rpm. That is the factory rev limiter, and the Superchip does not change it. We have had about 3-4 people now report seeing indications of rpms in excess of 6000, and that is just tach error, you are not turning anything over 5600 rpm regardless, so don't worry! Each of these individuals who have reported this have reported basically the same thing, they see this with or without the Superchip, so just remember, the Superchip does not change the rev limiter in the supercharged Lightning, so you can't turn more than 5600.
Our bests to all,

Hi Mike:
Sorry, got kicked off of AOL twice trying to respond to your answer. Now am on Bellsouth.net so we will see.
The exhaust system I am going to purchase is sort of total. Headers, hipro cat, mufflers and tips exiting as do the normal Lightning systems. Not a cheap date, going for about $1200 or so.
As to the rpm question, I still consider it a fun topic, but not one worth debating here. As I said, the motor will do what it will do and I am not worried about the accuracy of my tach nor that of my dyno guy. If it improves the performance as I have experienced, I am happy with that.
Can we get 500 hp at at the flywheel without juice is an interesting question. As you know, I am not longer a quarter mile type guy; I would just like to stretch the envelope without destroying the engine nor getting into warranty problems. The mods I have done and contemplate doing should not be a problem in that respect.
I would bet that we will come up about 30/40 horsepower short of the 500 goal installing the sort of stuff we are talking about. The only other thing I can think of is to increase the boost, and for now, that is not on my list of "things to do".
As always, your further comments are looked forward to and appreciated.

Bill Murray-
My truck is stock except for the Superchip. I had about 8,500 miles on it when these runs were made.
Temprature outside was ~70, however, I see on the printout that came with the graph that the intake temprature was just under 75 degrees F inside the building. Barometer was 29.03 inches.
Paul had a tough time trying to get a pull without it kicking down a gear. He kept raising the start RPMs until it wouldn't kick down in 3rd gear, about 3,100 RPMs. He said the torque numbers would have been higher if he could have pulled in second from around 2,000 RPM.
Paul is looking for a device he can plug into a Ford to hold the trans in a gear. He has one for GM's. There were a lot of Ford engineers there (FME is a Ford sponsored club) and someone said they would talk to Powertrain to see what was available.

Bill,
I am not an expert on the Lightnings but arguably you may have a warranty problem with headers and you may be well above your transmission's limit attempting 500 flywheel hp....

Thanks for input from both of you.
I do worry about warranty, as I suspect it would take 10/12K for me to replace a complete motor and probably 3/4K for a tranny.
In that sense, I do not abuse my Lightning, or not very often at least. Probably have really used all the power 15 20 times in 3K miles. And, a lot of that was from a rolling start to avoid wheelspin and attendant abuse.
As to the mods, honestly, I would think Ford would be more upset over the air filter than the headers. The Lightning was originally specced with SVO headers if my reference material is correct. This was later changed to stock manifolds for some reason or another.
Again, I think the motor and trannie can probably accept a fair amount more power if used in an intelligent way. Mine will probably never see a drag strip and I have more fun pulling other folk from 30-40 and up than smoking my $200+ tires.
The only thing that concerns me now, is by the end of Oct. I will have spent over 3 grand on a leased truck! I may have to buy the damned thing when it comes off lease to protect my investment in "goodies".
Bloody addictive, these Lightnings.
