Post Gears Again!!!!

I talked to a local vendor about putting a 410 gear in my 99, he said he has done 7 or so 99's,all with 410's. He told me that the speed-o will correct itself, that nothing had to be done it works off the ABS sensor on the gear case.
Any comments anyone???????????

Cool

HI!... SVT54SC, the vendor you talked to is totally wrong! I had 4.10 gears installed in my truck about 2 weeks ago. The dealer installed my gears and told me that the speedo on my "99" had to be recalibrated. The technition that was trained to do the recalibrations was on vacation at the time, so another mechanic that was there tryed to do it and was not sure if he got it right. They told me later that the speedo was still out by 10kph (at 80kph I was actually doing 70kph) and to make another appointment when the proper technition got back from vacation. Well today I wanted to compare my speedo with my freinds F-150, and they were right, it is out by 10kph at 80kph, but what they forgot to mention that at 130kph my speedo is reading 152kph. Thats 22kph difference, and it gets worst the faster I go. And because the vehicle speed sensor is connected to the speedo my top speed limiter went from 108mph to 92mph. My buddy's F-150 V-6 beats me now for top speed! I made a appointment for next FRIDAY to get the speedo recalibrated properly and will let you know how it turns out.

HI!... By the way if your speedo is off, you are adding a lot of exter miles to your odometer that you actually hav'nt travelled.

You dont gain horsepower with gear changes. It just changes where it appears.

Beat ya Neal!

My dealer says the only option for the 99 Lightning is the 3.73 ring & pinion set. While this may be true according to his parts manual, I understand that the 4.10 from the 99 Expedition will fit. He is telling me that the Expedition set is an 8.75 instead of the 9.75 that is required by the new Lightning, but he admitted that he wasn't 100% sure. If I make a change, I want it to be significant (the 4.10 instead of the 3.73). Can anybody help clear this up?

Thanks

if the rear end is out of an expedition[which it is] then the 4.11 gears in the svt book should work.and as far as the speedometer goes it is recalibrated through the diognostic plug under the hood. they reset the so called pariminters in the computer to correct it.it can be done as many times as needed unlike the older speedometers that could only be done 3 times.this was told to me by the man at the ford place who knows his stuff.

HI!... Well I got my truck back last FRIDAY and I have a problem. The mechanic (a good friend of mine) who was trained to do the recalibrations tried for 4 hours to recalibrate my speedo with no luck. He finally called up SVT and they told him that the "99" F-150 speedo could not be recalibrated from the back of the speedo. They suggested that we reflash the computer (schedualed for this FRIDAY) with some new parameters that they gave him or that the V.S.S gear in the rearend must be changed to the proper size. (almost the same thing as the old tranny speedo gears, but this one is in the rearend) I"ii let you guys know how it goes on FRIDAY. Now this means that I have to send my SUPERCHIP back to SUPERCHIPS, WILL THIS EVER END!!!!!!!
