Post Stock Air Filter Element Not in Stock

If any of you guys plan to leave the stock air filter system in place, you might want to order a filter or two now from your Ford dealer.
I tried getting one last week before heading to Iowa and racing on Sunday. None of the SVT dealers in my area had an element in stock. I also tried to find a similair sized filter at the local Wal-Mart, but none of the rectanglar filters were as large as the Lightning's.
This air filter element is specific to the Lightning, thus probably won't ever be available at your local auto parts store. Cost from Ford is $15.00.

Sal, how much are replacement elements for your system? This might motivate a few more of us to procure your system.

Even with 8500 miles on the original element, I was able to turn my truck's best run to date, a 13.697 @ 101.72. which wasn't quite good enough to beat out my brother's 69 SS396 (now 402)Camaro. Maybe next season, with a few more minor modifications we can shut him up.
Jeff, notice I'm getting closer to your before airbox mods time.

There was another 99 Lightning, a black one running sans cowl screw covers, and 16" Drag Radials. His best was a 13.688.@ 101.XX.

dumb question:
lightningbob, i saw you mentioned that cowl screw cover thing again. What are cowl screws, where are they located, and what seems to be different about those lacking them? I'd like to check my lightning for this.

Nathan:

The "really" fast Lightnings are the early production red ones with covers over the screw holes on the cowl (the black plastic piece just in front of the windshield). These covers significantly reduce the aerodynamic drag on the truck, thus making them much faster.

Actually, this reply is similar to the viscious rumor posted some time ago by I believe MRBBQMAN. This will go down in the annals of history as one of the things to look for in a truely collectable Lightning
See what you started MRBBQMAN!

Hey Bob,Sal here. The filters used in my 99 Lightning kits are washable and do not need to be replaced. I will also be offering the Outerwear cover for them soon as well.

Lightning Bob,

Are you sure that the air filter is specific to the Lightning? My Owners Guide Supplement says that it's a Motorcraft FA-1634 filter, the same one used in the standard 5.4.

You may want to double check and make a trip down to the local auto parts store (could save you some $$$).

Take Care,

Exclamation

Your owners manual has an incorrect part# for the air filter, according to SVT the correct # is: FA-1682. Make the note in your manual or call 1-800-FORDSVT.

Thanks for the info on the filter number being wrong in the owners manual. You probably saved me a future trip (back) to the parts store.
