Upper Pulley or Lower Change on 99 Gen 2 "HELP"

I recently bought another 99 with....get this... 590 "original miles" on it.

Anyway, I had a horrible experience with my 1st 99, when I tried changing the upper pulley. Killed the S/C.

A friend has a pulley puller that he purchased for his 04 Cobra, says it's specfically for the Eatons and it works like a charm.

The 99 is a pressed fit pulley, did they change the design of this with newer years? Should I try this again, or go with a lower?

Thanks.
Mike

I am confused... what do you mean by you killed the s/c

All the Lightnings use a press fit pulley and your friends cobra puller will work just fine...

I killed it meaning, after I put the pulley on, the S/C was spitting sparks.

I may have used the wrong puller, as it was flywheel puller, Craftsman.

Anyway, it was a PAIN to get it off and then had issues getting the new pulley on. Had to heat it up.

I guess you can say I was probably one of the first guys on this forum to try it back in 99. It wasn't a good idea.

I upgraded to a 2lb(2.7") upper last year and used this pulley puller

and had the old pulley out and new pulley in, in about 30 mins. It was a piece of cake and it was my first time doing it. If its the right puller it should be a breeze.

my vote would be for a lower. less belt slippage. and less of a chance of screwing up the snout.

That sucks you messed up a 590 mile 99 L... You might just look in the classifieds of NLOC and spend $600 and buy a ported Eaton now...

And yeah, you used need to change the lower pulley, not the upper until you are looking to make more than 6# of boost over stock...

I purchased that pulley puller from Pulley technologies on eBay. I went with this because this puller fits around the whole pulley.

Lower pully is all I ever plan on messing with, it offers more flexiblity:

common sizes: 2, 4, 6, 8
other sizes that can be found: 3, 5

Plus, (for me) after the first lower pully change, it's easy as he11 now. The first time took me 2+ hours, now I'm down to 30 mins after the truck is lifted on the rack at FT Belvoir.
